The "Father of the House" -- Earl Winterton, P.C., who up to the recent dissolution of Parliament was the "Father of the House of Commons", appears in a British Broadcasting Corporation television programme called "Speaking Personally", and tells Mark Bonham-Carter about the House of Commons as it was when he was first elected in 1904. Lord Winterton spent forty-Six of his sixty-seven years as a member of Parliament, a period of service that few men can equal. He has now decided to retire from Parliamentary life to devote his time to domestic and country pursuits on the Sussex estate which his family has owned for two hundred and fifty years.
