Date: 8th century ().The monogram of Christ along with the Greek letters alpha and omega, referring to Christ as the beginning and end of all things, were common motifs on Christian tombstones. This piece--like several others from this region--oddly displays the alpha and omega upside down, probably a mistake on the part of the non-Greek-speaking sculptor. Three Pommel Plates of a Saddle ca. 1520-40 German This set of pommel plates represents a particular variation on a basic type that appears to have been fairly widespread, judging from the surviving numbers of comparative examples. This specific form is characterized by a central pommel plate consisting of a top piece in the shape of a flattened oval, beneath which there is a boxed or faceted base, with the facets merging into a chamfered recess that ends in a sharp, upward curve near the top of each sideplate. Additional examples of this particular type include two other pommel plates in the Metropolitan Museum (acc. nos. 14.25.1643, and 29.158.398).In a closely related and apparently more common variant, the pommel plate has a raised notch embossed at the center of its top edge, in addition to the other features described above. Lock 16th century German The decoration of Gothic iron locks and keys was often elaborate and of the highest standard of workmanship. The motifs were frequently drawn from Gothic architecture, reproducing on a miniature scale complicated tracery patterns and even tiny statuettes. A number of these tiny locks were compound, with some of the mechanisms concealed from view, and required two or even three keys used in sequence to open them. It has been suggested that the greatly expanded use of locks on doors, or coffrets and other types of storage chests was a result of the increasing urbanization of life and the new emphasis on material wealth and private ownership which developed in the late Middle Ages..
