Manet's Studio in the Batignolles 1870 Henri Fantin-Latour French This drawing depicts Fantin-Latours circle of friends and fellow practitioners of Impressionism. The artist made it as a preparatory study for a painting exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1870. Édouard Manet is seated before his easel. Surrounding him are other artists, critics, and writers of the Batignolles Group, named after the Paris district where they often convened to discuss ideas. Included are artists Auguste Renoir, Jean-Frédéric Bazille, and Claude Monet, sculptor and journalist Zacharie Astruc, writer Émile Zola, and patron Edmond Maître. Fantin-Latour was a skilled lithographer, and it is possible that he used greasy crayons intended for drawing on slabs of limestone in the lithographic printing process to render this sketch on paper.. The caption for this image reads: 'Lincoln from painting by Howard Pyle.' Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He served from March 1861 to his assassination on April 15, 1865. Howard Pyle (died 1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. On February 21, 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln arrived in Philadelphia en route to Washington, D.C.. After a 34-gun salute, he rode from the depot in an open carriage pulled by four white horses to the Continental Hotel as anywhere from 100,000 to a quarter of a million people cheered him on. Mrs. Margaret C. Pyle was one of the onlookers, having come up from Wilmington, Delaware, at the invitation of a friend. Some 46 years later, Mrs. Pyles son Howard painted this illustration for Lincolns Last Day by William H. Crook (Harpers Monthly Magazine, September 1907.

Sulking ca. 1870 Edgar Degas French Two well-known personalities in the art world, the writer Edmond Duranty and model Emma Dobigny, posed for this early genre scene by Degas, set in an office, possibly a small bank. From the faithfully copied British racing print to the stylishly attired female protagonist, it recalls the work of fellow artist James Tissot. Yet for all the exacting detail, the subject of this picture remains elusive. The models elegant visiting dress, curiously worn without a hat, and the informality of her pose may suggest a familial or intimate relationship, but Degas offers faint clue as to the cause of his "sulking.". Two Men ca. 1865-69 Edgar Degas French Degas often depicted individuals off-guard in their own environment in order to reveal characteristic gestures and poses that convey a sense of the sitter's personality or identity. The setting of this informal scene may be an artist's studio. The man on the right is possibly the painter Émile Lévy, who was a student at the French Academy in Rome when Degas met him in the late 1850s. No name has been proposed for the man on the left..
