Date: 1851.This intimate, evocative interior view belongs to a group of five paintings in which Menzel studied the effects of light in simply furnished spaces he occupied in Berlin between 1845 and 1851. They are entirely characteristic of his unwavering eye for quotidian detail, yet the artist considered such works experiments and he never exhibited them. Candlelight subjects were unfashionable in Paris where Anna Maria Therbusch nonetheless submitted one for candidacy to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. She was denied one of three positions allotted to female artists on the grounds that a woman could not have painted such an accomplished work, Therbusch agreed to be observed painting by the male committee and was admitted to membership on her second attempt. The Sense of Sight Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds The mirror projecting a womans face towards us has been included in order to create an allegory of sight, probably based on prototypes by Jusepe de Ribera, a Spanish painter active in Naples from 1616 until his death in 1652. The present painters name remains unknown, though similar handling and palette are found in a small group of works executed in Naples between around 1620 and 1640. The conceit of the mirror offering two views and evoking sight and self-knowledge are found to similar effect in Elisabeth Vigée Le Bruns Julie Le Brun, Looking in a Mirror (1787), also part of The Mets collection..
