This 1840s illustration shows the American Army at Valley Forge. The Continental Army was established in 1775, after the outbreak of the American Revolution, by the Continental Congress. Valley Forge in southeastern Pennsylvania was the site of the main camp from December 1777 to June 1778 and the troops suffered through a severe winter. George Washington was the commander in chief.
