Folding range with a sheet of paper, on which three cartouches of gold paint at the front in which pastoral scenes (fishermen, shepherdin, farmer's) and the rear are a fisherman under a tree, on an ivory of Ivory Ajour and in relief with 'Métal and Quatre Couleurs', Anonymous, c. 1775 - c. 1780 The three fields on the front of the magazine are entirely dominated by the idealized, unspoiled country life; In the middle a gallant group that is fishing, on the left a pastroral scene with a shepherdess and on the right a farmer's wife who comes back from milking with the yoke on the shoulders and stuffed buckets. Because of the hill with the castle in the background in the fishing scene, it can be assumed that a middle or southern European example has been used for this performance. Fan 1880 Donaldson Brothers American Trade fans such as this were a result of the profound commercial and social changes set in motion by the Industrial Revolution. They were given away to customers for promotional purposes. Like magazine ads of the time, the fans were instructive as a document of costume and social history. In this example produced by Kohn & Adler, a Philadelphia hat manufacturer, the image not only depicts various styles of hats in the company's stock in 1880 but also supplies the names given to each one. Mourning fan. Culture: American. Date: 1887-89.This fan belonged to Amelia Beard Hollenback (1844-1918), wife of the prominent financier and philanthropist John Welles Hollenback (1835-1923). The fan was most likely part of Amelia's mourning wardrobe worn after the death of her closest sister, Julia Beard (1849-1887). Parasol 1886 American This charming parasol belonged to Juliette Geneva Hollenback (1881-1917), the youngest daughter of prominent financier and philanthropist John Welles Hollenback (1834-1923) and may have accompanied dress 2009.300.900. Purchased for Juliette in 1886 during a trip to California by her Aunt Julia, this scaled-down version of an adult's accessory indicates that there was a great deal of fondness between the two women.
