Dadswell.Before the war, jobless, frustrated and undernourished, Bass was forced to carry his swag through the backblocks of NSW and Queensland.Though compelled to filtter away valuable years as a rouse about in shearing sheds and as a laborer, he is, according to Mr. Dadswell, one of the rare Australian "finds" who has an essential sculptural outlook.Throughout his fight against adversity, Bass seized every opportunity to pursue his boyhood ambition to carve.After a long period "on the roads." he spent four years as a model at art schools, which allowed him time to continue his studies in sculpture.
