STS006-03-381 (4-9 April 1983) --- Astronaut F. Story Musgrave, STS-6 mission specialist, monitors the activity of a sample in the continuous flow electrophoresis system (CFES) aboard the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Challenger. Dr. Musgrave is in the middeck area of the spacecraft. He has mounted a 35mm camera to record the activity through the window of the experiment. This frame was also photographed with a 35mm camera.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- United Space Alliance Aft Technician Bobby Wright looks at the gaseous nitrogen pressure regulator in the left Orbital Maneuvering System pod on Space Shuttle Endeavour. The component showed pressure differentials during the launch count May 30, 2002, and mission managers elected to replace it after the launch was scrubbed due to weather concerns. The launch of Endeavour on Mission STS-111, Utilization Flight 2 to the International Space Station, has been rescheduled for June 5, 2002

Spacelab was a reusable laboratory used on certain spaceflights flown by the Space Shuttle. The laboratory comprised multiple components, including a pressurized module, an unpressurized carrier and other related hardware housed in the Shuttle's cargo bay. The components were arranged in various configurations to meet the needs of each spaceflight. Spacelab components flew on 22 Shuttle missions between November 1983 and April 1998. Deutches Museum. iss060e035097 (8/12/2019) --- European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Luca Parmitano injects media into the culture bag of the Micro-15 investigation in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) abroad the International space Station (ISS). The goal of this investigation is to better understand the effects of gravity on the differentiation of mammalian cells using 3-D cultures of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. This study investigates how exposure to microgravity fundamentally alters cell regulation and how these changes can affect the timing, progression, and outcomes of cell differentiation.

STS107-E-05021 (17 January 2003) --- Astronaut Laurel B. Clark, STS-107 mission specialist, uses a camera to photograph the topography of a point on Earth from an overhead window on the aft flight deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia.

STS029-04-028 (March 1989) --- One of a series of photographs released in conjunction with the STS-29 post-flight press conference on March 28, 1989 at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), Houston, Texas. Onboard Discovery for the five-day mission were Astronauts Michael L. Coats, John E. Blaha, James F. Buchli, James P. Bagian and Robert C. Springer. STS029-04-028 --- A 35mm frame of Blaha using the overhead window on Discovery's aft flight deck to capture Earth scenes with the IMAX motion picture camera.

NASA astronaut Terry Virts of Expedition 43 on the International Space Station checks the remote control Canadarm2 on Apr.26, 2015. The Canadarm 2 is used to grapple arriving spacecraft and moving them to their docking ports.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, astronaut Terry Virts conducts a fit check of the robotic workstation, or RWS, in the International Space Station's Cupola module. The RWS is provided by the Canadian Space Agency. The module was delivered by the European Space Agency in 2004 to Kennedy from Alenia Spazio in Turin, Italy. Cupola will provide unprecedented views of activities outside the station and spectacular views of the Earth. Crew members working inside the module will have a 360-degree panoramic view. Cupola has the capability for command and control workstations to be installed to assist in space station remote manipulator system and extra vehicular activities. Cupola is the final element of the space station core and is scheduled for launch on space shuttle Endeavour's STS-130 mission, targeted for Dec. 10, 2009.

ISS036-E-020762 (16 July 2013) --- NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, Expedition 36 flight engineer, attired in an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuit, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as work continues on the International Space Station. A little more than one hour into the spacewalk, European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano (out of frame) reported water floating behind his head inside his helmet. The water was not an immediate health hazard for Parmitano, but Mission Control decided to end the spacewalk early.

S88-E-5030 (12-05-98) --- Astronaut Nancy J. Currie gently mated the 12.8-ton Unity connecting module to Endeavour's docking system late afternoon of Dec. 5, successfully completing the first task in assembling the new International Space Station. Deftly manipulating the shuttle's 50-foot-long robot arm, Currie placed Unity just inches above the extended outer ring on Endeavour's docking mechanism, enabling astronaut Robert D. Cabana, mission commander, to fire downward maneuvering jets, locking the shuttle's docking system to one of two Pressurized Mating Adapters (PMA) attached to Unity. Turning her head to her right, Currie is using one of the TV monitors on the aft flight deck to assist in the precise maneuver. The photo was taken with an electronic still camera (ESC) at 22:31:08 GMT, Dec. 5.

JSC2011-E-016860 (11 Feb. 2011) --- NASA astronaut Michael Fincke, STS-134 mission specialist, participates in a simulation exercise in the motion-base shuttle mission simulator in the Jake Garn Simulation and Training Facility at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In Orbiter Processing Facility 3 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, a technician makes a fit check of boundary layer transition tile underneath space shuttle Discovery. Scheduled to launch on the STS-119 mission, Discovery will carry the S6 truss segment to complete the 361-foot-long backbone of the International Space Station. The truss includes the fourth pair of solar array wings and electronics that convert sunlight to power for the orbiting laboratory. Discovery is targeted to launch Feb. 12, 2009.

STS111-383-033 (5-19 June 2002) --- Astronaut Daniel W. Bursch, Expedition Four flight engineer, squeezes under compartments on the middeck of the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

STS072-302-029 (11-20 Jan. 1996) --- Astronaut Brent W. Jett Jr. mans the pilots station aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour during rendezvous operations with the Japanese Space Flyer Unit (SFU). The pilot joined five other astronauts for a week a half aboard Endeavour in Earth-orbit.

STS105-E-5002 (10 August 2001) ---Astronaut Scott J. Horowitz, STS-105 commander, checks flight notes at the commander's station on the flight deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Discovery. The image was recorded with a digital still camera.

STS98-E-5120 (11 February 2001) --- This digital still camera shot shows Expedition One commander William M. (Bill) Shepherd looking through the portal on Unity's closed hatch to the newly attached Destiny laboratory. (Note: Astronauts Kenneth D. Cockrell and Mark L. Polansky appear at the left and right edges, respectively, but could possibly be cropped out in some views). The crews of Atlantis and the International Space Station opened the laboratory shortly after this photo was made on February 11; and the astronauts and cosmonauts spent the first full day of what are planned to be years of work ahead inside the orbiting science and command center. Shepherd opened the Destiny hatch, and he and shuttle commander Cockrell ventured inside at 8:38 a.m. (CST), Feb. 11. As depicted in subsequent digital images in this series, members of both crews went to work quickly inside the new module, activating air systems, fire extinguishers, alarm systems, computers and internal communications.

ISS005-E-08698 (6 August 2002) --- Cosmonaut Sergei Y. Treschev, Expedition Five flight engineer, uses an amateur radio in the functional cargo block (FGB) on the International Space Station (ISS). Treschev represents Rosaviakosmos.

STS087-323-030 (19 November - 5 December 1997) ---Ukrainian payload specialist Leonid K. Kadenyuk blocks out the world and much more as he sleeps on the mid-deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. Kadenyuk joined five NASA astronauts for 16 days aboard Columbia in support of the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP) mission.

STS062-17-034 (4-18 March 1994) --- This scene, resembling a photographer's studio/laboratory, actually shows the aft flight deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. A variety of cameras, lenses, visual aids and other gear are seen stowed around the flight deck. The five astronaut crew members devoted a large portion of their on-duty time at this workstation using some of this photographic equipment to record Earth imagery.

STS029-06-015 (13-18 March 1989) --- This scene of an astronaut with a camera was a common one during the five-day flight of STS-29. Astronaut James P. Bagian, STS-29 mission specialist, aims the Arriflex motion picture camera at Earth through one of Discovery's overhead windows. The scene was recorded with a 35mm camera.

ISS036-E-005774 (2 June 2013) --- Inside the Cupola, European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano, an Expedition 36 flight engineer, eyeballs a point on Earth some 250 miles below him and the International Space Station before pinpointing a specific photo target of opportunity. He holds a digital still camera, equipped with a 400mm lens. Parmitano has been on board the orbital outpost for about three days and will continue his stay into November

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - At Launch Complex 39B, a technician in Space Shuttle Discovery's payload bay prepares a borescope for an inspection of the retract link assembly on the orbiter's main landing gear door. The inspection is a precautionary measure after a small crack was found in a retract link assembly on the right-hand main landing gear on orbiter Atlantis. An initial review of the closeout photos of the link assembly on Discovery did not reveal any cracks. Discovery is scheduled to return the Space Shuttle fleet to operational status on mission STS-114. This additional work does not impact the launch planning window of July 13-31.

ISS034-E-055885 (25 Feb. 2013) --- Inside the Cupola of the International Space Station, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, Expedition 34 flight engineer, sits in for a refresher session with the controls of the Canadian-built Space Station Remote Manipulator System or Canadarm2. In less than a week, the crew will receive a welcome visit by the SpaceX Dragon vehicle, which is scheduled to bring supplies up to the orbital outpost during the first week of March. After being docked to the station for several days, Dragon will return to Earth with a different batch of materials and hardware.

S94-26350 (10 Jan. 1994) --- Astronaut Catherine G. Coleman seems to enjoy the brief period of weightlessness she is sharing with fellow members of the 1992 class of astronauts. The weightless experience was afforded by a special parabolic pattern flown by NASAs KC-135 zero gravity aircraft. Left to right behind her are astronauts Michael E. Lopez-Alegria, Kevin R. ISS041-E-020532 (23 Sept. 2014) --- European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst, Expedition 41 flight engineer, uses a still camera at a window in the Cupola of the International Space Station as the SpaceX Dragon commercial cargo craft (out of frame) approaches the International Space Station on Sept. 23, 2014.

S124-E-007975 (9 June 2008) --- Astronaut Mike Fossum, STS-124 mission specialist, sleeps in his sleeping bag, which is attached to the lockers on the middeck of the Space Shuttle Discovery, while docked with the International Space Station.

STS081-368-011 (12-22 Jan. 1997) --- Astronaut Brent W. Jett, Jr., STS-81 pilot, appears restful and unfazed as Russia's Mir Space Station appears in the window over his shoulder on the Space Shuttle Atlantis' aft flight deck. Following docking of Mir and Atlantis, Jett and his crew mates went on to spend several days sharing experiments and supply-transfer with the Mir-22 crewmembers.

STS064-33-003 (9-20 Sept. 1994) --- Astronaut Susan J. Helms, STS-64 mission specialist, uses a laser instrument during operations with the Shuttle Pointed Autonomous Research Tool for Astronomy 201 (SPARTAN 201). Helms, who spent many mission hours at the controls of the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), joined five other NASA astronauts for almost 11 days in Earth orbit aboard the space shuttle Discovery.

51A-20-004 (12 Nov. 1984) --- Astronaut Anna L. Fisher is pictured near the aft flight deck of Discovery, where she remained very busy on Nov. 12 and 14 while fellow crew members worked to retrieve two stranded communications satellites. Fisher appears to be taking photos from the observation station. A camera floats just above her head.

David Bushman at the Mission Manager's console onboard NASA's DC-8 during the AirSAR 2004 campaign. AirSAR 2004 is a three-week expedition by an international team of scientists that will use an all-weather imaging tool, called the Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (AirSAR), in a mission ranging from the tropical rain forests of Central America to frigid Antarctica.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- On the launch tower at Launch Complex 17-A, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, a technician makes a connection of the Comet Nucleus Tour (CONTOUR) spacecraft (above) to the Boeing Delta II rocket (below). CONTOUR will provide the first detailed look into the heart of a comet -- the nucleus. Flying as close as 60 miles (100 kilometers) to at least two comets, the spacecraft will take the sharpest pictures yet of a nucleus while analyzing the gas and dust that surround these rocky, icy building blocks of the solar system. Launch of CONTOUR is scheduled for July 1, 2002

ISS020-E-037175 (30 Aug. 2009) --- Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko, Expedition 20 flight engineer, uses a High Definition Video (HDV) camera in the Pressurized Mating Adapter 2 (PMA-2) of the International Space Station while Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-128) remains docked with the station.

ISS01-E-5340 (12 February 2001) --- Cosmonaut Yuri P. Gidzenko, Expedition One's Soyuz commander, prepares to take pictures through the porthole in the Destiny laboratory. Gidzenko's photos will document parts of the second STS-98 space walk in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The legs of one of the space walkers can be seen through the window. Representing the Russian Aviation and Space Agency along with another cosmonaut, Gidzenko is part of a three man crew that intiated full-time habitation of the outpost in early November of 2000. This scene was recorded with a digital still camera.

ISS036-E-039425 (3 Sept. 2013) --- European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano, Expedition 36 flight engineer, reads over a procedures checklist in the International Space Stations Cupola during preparations to release the Japanese "Kounotori" H2 Transfer Vehicle-4 (HTV-4) ending its one-month stay at the space station. SL3-111-1516 (July-September 1973) --- Astronaut Alan L. Bean, Skylab 3 commander, uses a battery powered shaver in the crew quarters of the Orbital Workshop (OWS) aboard the Skylab space station cluster in Earth orbit. Astronaut Bean, Owen K. Garriott, science pilot, and Jack R. Lousma, pilot, went on to successfully complete 59 days aboard the Skylab cluster in Earth orbit.

The first direct exposure to Lunar material for Crew Reception Personnel probably happened late Friday, 07/25/1969. Terry Slezak (displaying Moon dust on his left hand fingers), MSC photographic technician, was removing film magazines from the first of two (2) containers when the incident occurred. As he removed the plastic seal from Magazine S , one of the 70mm magazines taken during Apollo XI Extravehicular Activity (EVA), it was apparent that the exterior of the cassette displayed traces of a black powdery substance. Apollo XI Commander Neil Armstrong reported during the mission that he had retrieved a 70mm cassette which had dropped to the Lunar surface. Seen in the backgound is John H. Boynton. SL3-113-1586 (July-September 1973) --- This photograph is an illustration of the humorous side of the Skylab 3 crew. This dummy was left behind in the Skylab space station by the Skylab 3 crew to be found by the Skylab 4 crew. The dummy is dressed in a flight suit and placed in the Lower Body Negative Pressure Device. The name tag indicates that it represents Gerald P. Carr, Skylab 4 commander, in the background is a partial view of the dummy for William R. Pogue, Skylab 4 pilot, propped upon the bicycle ergometer. The dummy representing Edward G. Gibson, Skylab science pilot, was left in the waste compartment. Astronauts Alan L. Bean, Owen K. Garriott and Jack R. Lousma were the Skylab 3 crewmen.

STS109-E-5621 (5 March 2002) --- Astronaut Richard M. Linnehan, mission specialist, monitors the STS-109 mission's second space walk from the aft flight deck of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Astronauts James H. Newman and Michael J. Massimino were working on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), temporarily captured in the shuttle's cargo bay. Linnehan had participated in the mission's first space walk on the previous day. This image was recorded with a digital still camera.

S131-E-009602 (13 April 2010) --- Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Naoko Yamazaki, STS-131 mission specialist, works in the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) linked to the International Space Station while space shuttle Discovery remains docked with the station.

STS079-341-036 (16-26 Sept. 1996) --- Following the space shuttle Atlantis' separation from the Russian Mir Space Station, astronaut Jerome (Jay) Apt, mission specialist, eyeballs a photographic target on Earth prior to capturing it on film with a handheld 70mm camera from the aft flight deck. Scientists at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), who helped to plan the various target sites, will later analyze the film in their Houston laboratories.

JSC2010-E-195530 (3 Dec. 2010) --- While seated at the pilots station, NASA astronaut Doug Hurley, STS-135 pilot, participates in a training session in the crew compartment trainer (CCT-2) in the Space Vehicle Mock-up Facility at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Hurley is wearing a training version of his shuttle launch and entry suit. STS-135 is planned to be the final mission of the space shuttle program.

S129-E-009312 (25 Nov. 2009) --- Astronaut Nicole Stott, STS-129 mission specialist, looks through one of Atlantis' aft flight deck windows toward the International Space Station, which she called "home" for almost three months, as the two vehicles continue their relative post-undocking separation. Undocking of the two spacecraft occurred at 3:53 a.m. (CST) on Nov. 25, 2009.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In the Orbiter Processing Facility, STS-115 Commander Brent Jett completes inspection of the orbiter Atlantis. The crew is at KSC for Crew Equipment Interface Test activities, which involve equipment familiarization and inspection, a routine part of astronaut training and launch preparations. The STS-115 mission will deliver the second port truss segment, the P3/P4 truss, to the International Space Station. The crew will attach the P3 to the first port truss segment, the P1 truss, as well as deploy solar array set 2A and 4A. Launch on Space Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled for late August.

STS079-358-027 (16-26 September 1996) --- Astronaut William F. Readdy looks over a checklist at the commander's station on the Space Shuttle Atlantis' flight deck. Among his many other duties as mission commander, Readdy controlled the Orbiter during a series of maneuvers associated with the docking and undocking operations with Russia's Mir Space Station. This photograph is one of fifteen 35mm frames (along with four 70mm frames) of still photography documenting the activities of NASA's STS-79 mission, which began with a September 16, 1996, liftoff from Launch Pad 39A the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and ended with a landing at KSC on September 26, 1996.
