Gas Turbine For Merchant Ship World's First : Newcastle-on-Tyne -- Destined to be the power unit for the world's first merchant ship to be driven by a gas turbine engine, the turbine, alternator, and bedplate is lifted on the quayside here.The unit will be fitted in the "Auris", a 12,000-ton deadweight tanker, which although has been operating as a normal oil tanker for the three years since being commissioned, was designed for a gas turbine engine.The engine was built by the British Thomson - Houston Company Limited. First Pictures Of Another British Rocket - Mr. H.M. Woodhams, Managing Director of Armstrong Whitworth, is seen pointing to the features of the rocket. The first picture to be released of "an early Armstrong Whitworth guided missile test vehicle". The auxiliary booster rockets, which help the main vehicle accelerate to full supersonic cruising speed, can clearly be seen in a band around the main vehicle.
