Self-portrait. A distinguished citizen dressed in decorous black is seated before a red curtain and tassel. Jan Steen, known primarily for his humorous scenes with simple folk, portrayed himself here as utterly self-assured. He also regularly included himself in other paintings, but then usually in a comic role.

Portrait of a Man, probably a Member of the Van Beresteyn Family. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 44 x 35 in. (111.8 x 88.9 cm). Date: 1632.The man is most likely Cornelis van Beresteyn (1586-1638), a wealthy burgomaster of Delft. His restrained pose and sober expression contrast with the animation and accessibility that Rembrandt usually attributed to members of Amsterdam society. At the time, portraits in Delft and in the neighboring court city of The Hague were remarkably conservative, adhering to a tradition that went back to Spanish royal portraits of the mid-1500s. Abraham van Riebeeck (1709-1713). The highest-ranking Dutch East India Company (VOC) official in Asia was the governor-general. He presided in the Castle of Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia), a fort built by the Dutch. The assembly hall in the Castle of Batavia was the centre of Dutch power in Asia. The walls were hung with portraits of all of the governors-general. Most of the 18th-century examples shown here were painted in Asia, often by anony¬mous artists.

Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist. He became the leading court painter in England and is renowned for his portraits of Charles I of England and his family. Among his other works are Portrait of the Artist's Wife and Duke of Richmond. This painting is titled Portrait of Van Dyck or The Artist, and it is a self-portrait, perhaps one of his most striking of Van Dyck. It was painted at a fairly late date in his career and shows him prosperous and rich and content with himself. Indeed, a deal of the fascination of his art arises from his approaching his subjects in this happy frame of mind.

Francis Brinley. Artist: John Smibert (American, Edinburgh, Scotland 1688-1751 Boston, Massachusetts). Dimensions: 50 x 39 1/4 in. (127 x 99.7 cm). Date: 1729.Francis Brinley (1690-1765) was born in England but moved to Newport, Rhode Island in 1710 at the request of his grandfather. He eventually settled in Boston, where he married Deborah Lyde, granddaughter of Nathaniel Byfield (24.109.87). In 1719, he inherited a substantial tract of land in Roxbury upon which he built the elaborate Datchet House residence. Smibert painted this portrait in Boston in May of 1729. The background, an early instance of landscape in American painting, represents a view of Boston from Brinley's country home. Smibert also painted a portrait of Brinley's wife (62.79.2).
