Sketchbook William Merritt Chase (American, 1849-1916). Sketchbook, 1872. Graphite and black, red and white Conté crayon on cream and tan medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 11 7/8 x 9 7/16 x 11/16 in. (30.2 x 24 x 1.7 cm). William Merritt Chases knack for realistic characterization is evident in these deftly executed informal portraits, possibly representing his fellow students at the Royal Academy in Munich. This sketchbook contains numerous other portraits, as well as figure studies from a life class, rendered with different approaches—the linear style seen here and a softer, tonal one used on other pages. This sketchbook (1992.373.1 recto-.27) contains thirty-four drawings in graphite and watercolor and appears to have been filled during a tour that the artist probably began near the Delaware Water Gap and extended north into the Catskill Mountains and Adirondacks of New York State. Few of the drawings in this book, however, can be linked to Hinckleys known paintings after 1864, and the majority of them represent not merely selected motifs, but discrete compositions that often assume the character of engraved vignettes..
