Maltese melon. Johann was just busy at the Wiener Hof and drew on behalf of the Archduke Johann von Austria (1782-1859) the fruits and flowers of the Botanical Garden in Schönbrunn Castle. These were equally domestic alpine plants and imported exotics brought by excursions of Austrian researchers. With great precision "portrayed" just over 100 apple varieties, nearly 30 pumpkin species or 73 different grapes. He built an archive of watercolors, from which he created copies for his clients as needed. Museum founder Justus Brinckmann (1843-1915) acquired in 1890 this archive with over 1150 drawings.
