Like Pisanello, who had produced medals for the Malatesta, Matteo was also active as a medallist at the Rimini court. Roger Fry 1911 Edith Woodman Burroughs American Fry (1866-1934) was an influential English art historian and critic, who in 1906 became the Metropolitan Museums curator of European paintings. Frys curatorial assistant was Bryson Burroughs, whose wife Edith executed this medallion of Fry as a gesture of friendship. Portrait of Antonio Canova (1757-1822) ca. 1822 Medalist: Francesco Putinati Antonio Canova (1757-1822) is considered the greatest Neoclassical sculptor of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Along with the painter Jacques Louis David, he was credited with ushering in a new aesthetic of clear, regularized form and calm repose inspired by classical antiquities. He was also renowned for his carving abilities and the refinement of his marble surfaces, which seemed as supple as real flesh. At his death, commemorations were held in Rome, Venice, and Possagno, and he was widely mourned and honored across Europe. The degree of his fame can be measured by the treatment of his corpse, as if it were a saintly relic. Although his body was entombed in the Tempio in Possagno, his hand was preserved at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Venice, and his heart placed in a tomb built by Neoclassical sculptors based on his own design in Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (see also 67.219.1).. Throughout his almost fifty-year career (1819-1856) David remained true to his conviction that sculptural monuments dedicated to the achievements of great men and women most permanently and vividly express the greatness of a people. He continuously sought commissions for monuments portraying historical and contemporary figures whom he admired in order to commit their contributions to posterity. His most famous public commission, the figurative pediment of the Pantheon in Paris (1830-1837), which commemorates great men and was dedicated by a grateful nation, exemplifies these life-long principles.
