This manuscript was commissioned by a Nepalese monk named Aryashrimittra in the year 239 of the Nepalese lunisolar calendar. This date corresponds specifically to 1119. Monks and laypeople alike became patrons of books in order to accrue religious merit, or punya, for themselves, their families, and their teachers. Doing so not only showed the patrons piety and status, but also assisted them in the cycle of reincarnation by excising bad karma. Commissioning books was also favorable because doing so disseminated the Buddhas teachings, as books are portable, unlike large stone monuments. "Amduat" Papyrus of Djedmutesankh ca. 1000-945 B.C. Third Intermediate Period Discovered rolled up and placed between the legs of Djedmutesankh's mummy, this papyrus is a "Book of What is in the Netherworld (Duat)." It illustrates the 11th and 12th hours of the night, during which the deceased would travel with the sun god through the hazardous land of the dead to be reborn each morning. At the left is the boat of the sun-god together with various deities and denizens of the (Duat). To the right the mummified Osiris reclines in the arms of the god of the air Shu, who holds up the heavens with outstretched arms. Near Shu's head is a scarab beetle, incarnation of the sun at dawn; this represents the moment just before sunrise. At the extreme right Djedmutesankh pours a libation to a seated figure of Osiris.. Reliquary and Printed Konpon Darani Text 765 CE-775 CE Japan. The miniature wooden reliquary displayed here is actually in the shape of a pagoda, or sacred tower. It is one of a set of a million such reliquaries made by the order of Empress ShÙtoku (718-770), and therefore, the set is known as the HyakumantÙ (one million pagodas). It is believed that the empress ordered these pagodas to be made as a prayer for peace after a violent rebellion in 764.These reliquaries each held short prayers (darani) of printed text taken from sutras, or sacred writings. A hole was carved into the wooden body of the pagoda to house the rolled-up text, and the ornamental crown acts as a plug. The darani text that was contained in this pagoda, and others like it, are among the oldest printed texts in existence.This pagoda was acquired before 1917 in Japan by Louise Norton Brown, an avid collector of Japanese printed material. The standing winged creature seen here is known as the nineheaded Bes figure, a divine protector of the birth of the king and of the sun. This form of Bes was closely associated with the evening and the night part of the solar cycle. He thus also played an important role as guardian of sleeping women and children, particularly against the dangers of the night, represented here by the noxious creatures contained in the oval upon which he stands.
