Jacob Christian Hansen Ellehammer's Experiments in Early Aviation (1905-1919). Artist: Jacob Christian Hansen Ellehammer (Danish, 1871-1946); Vilhelm Ellehammer (Danish). Dimensions: 9 13/16 × 14 1/8 × 11/16 in. (25 × 35.8 × 1.7 cm). Date: 1905-19.Unaware of the Wright brothers' success, the Danish engineer Ellehammer worked in isolation to invent a means of flight, a feat he achieved on September 12, 1906. He soon shifted his attention to vertical flight craft, succeeding in 1912 in hopping along above ground in an experimental helicopter. It is those early, tentative helicopter flights that we see in these remarkable photographs, part of an album documenting Ellehammer's experiments in aviation between 1905 and 1920. Don Ignacio Leonel Gómez Cervantes Mexican. Don Ignacio Leonel Gómez Cervantes, 1788. Oil on canvas, 40 1/2 x 32 1/2in. (102.9 x 82.6cm). Painted in two major colonial American centers, these portraits from Boston and Mexico City (then New Spain) share a formality of pose and an emphasis on fine costume that reveal a common source in European portraiture. John Haskins holds his hand on his hip, in a pose of authority found in Elizabethan portraits. Nevertheless, this upright barrel maker known as Honest John Haskins” was a modest patron when compared to his wealthy and ambitious Mexican counterpart. The inscription at the bottom of Don Ignacio Leonel Gómez Cervantes’s portrait lists honors and inherited titles that explicitly identify him as a descendant of an aristocratic Spanish American family.
