Plaque with Saint John the Evangelist early 9th century Carolingian The Evangelist, accompanied by his symbol, the eagle, displays the opening text of his gospel. The deep layering of his tunic folds adds life and vigor to the Classical drapery forms. The roughly lettered inscription on the upper border, added at an early date, translates: "The word of John soars to heaven like an eagle." This plaque once was thought to be from a book cover, but it is now argued that this panel and three more, which represent the other authors of the Gospels, formed the wings of a triptych flanking an image of Christ in the central panel. Plaque with the Ascension ca. 1050 German The Ascension of Christ, that moment forty days after his resurrection when he ascended bodily into heaven, was a favored theme among carvers of ivory plaques in the early Middle Ages. The subject seemed to lend itself to an array of visual interpretations: though artists repeatedly turned to the subject, they never settled on rote depictions. Christ might leap to heaven with enthusiasm, step in a more purposeful way, or even fly. The amazed onlookers vary in number and display a variety of reactions.In this instance, Christ seems to float upward, looking and pointing toward the hand of God who reaches out, unusually, with a wreath of victory. Christ is flanked by two astounded apostles, while lively depictions of the personifications of Earth and Ocean appear below him, allusions to the physical world he leaves behind.. Reliquary Pendant with Queen Margaret of Sicily Blessed by Bishop Reginald of Bath 1174-77 British The engraved Latin inscription on the back identifies the subject: Bishop Reginald of Bath hands this over to Queen Margaret of Sicily.” The inscription on the front lists the relics once contained under a crystal: Of the blood of Saint Thomas martyr. Of his vestments stained with his blood: of the cloak, the belt, the hood, the shoe, the shirt.” The bishop probably presented this pendant to the queen on the occasion of her son’s marriage in 1177 to the daughter of Henry II. The king had instigated the murder of his former friend and chancellor, Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, on December 29, 1170.. Pax with the Crucifixion. Culture: South German. Dimensions: Overall: 3 3/4 x 3 1/8 x 15/16 in. (9.5 x 7.9 x 2.4 cm). Date: ca. 1360-70.The pax, meaning "peace," was a tablet that the priest and faithful kissed before taking Communion. This example depicts the Crucifixion with the Virgin, St. John, Longinus, and Stephaton. A sword, placed like a stream of blood flowing from Christ's wound, pierces Mary's breast. This iconographic motif developed out of meditations of Rhenish Dominican mystics on the sorrow of the Virgin at the death of her son. The Royal Palace (Preah Barum Reacha Veang Nei Preah Reacheanachak Kampuchea) and Silver Pagoda, in Phnom Penh, is a complex of buildings which serves as the royal residence of the king of Cambodia. Its full name in the Khmer language is Preah Barom Reachea Veang Chaktomuk. The Kings of Cambodia have occupied it since it was built in the 1860's, with a period of absence when the country came into turmoil during and after the reign of the Khmer Rouge. The palace was constructed after King Norodom relocated the royal capital from Oudong (Udong) to Phnom Penh in the mid-19th century. It was gradually built atop an old citadel called Banteay Kev. It faces towards the East and is situated at the Western bank of the four divisions at the Mekong River called Chaktomuk (an allusion to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation).

For her kneelt Elisabeth, the left arm beaten to the young John, who shows the child in the right hand, he clips a cruise under the left arm. Behind this greeting is Joseph, a pointed hat on the head. Above them a velum is span between the trees. On the right, on the second plan a gnarled tree stump.

Door Post with Grapevine Emerging from a Chalice and a Small Cross 6th-7th century In the 500s Apa (Father) Jeremias founded a Coptic monastery at Saqqara, the ancient Egyptian necropolis (cemetery) of the city of Memphis, near the oldest pyramids. He and the earliest monks lived in tombs at the site. As the monastery grew, several grand churches with lavish decoration were built, as well as many chapels, public buildings, and complexes of cells (rooms) for each monk. The monastery continued to grow after the Arab conquest with materials from early Byzantine tomb structures being reused for additional monastic structures. Inscriptions record prayers to numerous holy figures. Sculptural elements from Saqqara are often carved with deeply undercut patterns to intensify the play of light and shadow and to mask the solidity of the architecture. Drum panel depicting a stupa with the Buddha Descent from Trayastrimsa Heaven second half of the 3rd century India, Nagarjunakonda, Gunter District, Andhra Pradesh This limestone panel was part of a series that encircled the drum of a large stupa. It shows the Buddha standing in the gateway of a stupa being venerated by two female devotees. Attendants holding fly whisks (chauris) stand at either side of the gateway, which is crowned by lions. This detailed imagery documents what a stupa and its embellishing imagery looked like during this period. The somewhat elongated proportions of the people and animals and the corpulence of the Buddha are typical of the art of Nagarjunakonda.. Taoist Stele of Five Deities, 722, 21 1/4 x 16 3/16 x 6 7/16 in. (53.98 x 41.12 x 16.35 cm) (including attached mount), Black limestone, China, 8th century, As religious Daoism evolved during the Six Dynasties and Tang period (c. 4th-8th centuries), a sculptural tradition developed that was closely modeled after contemporary Buddhist prototypes. This rare, dated, stele is carved in the middle with the Supreme Elder Deity seated in dhyanasana on a raised lotus pedestal with two apsaras overhead in a pose similar to a Buddha. Flanking the central image are four further deities, probably Celestial Worthies, holding kui tablets, or zodiac gods standing on smaller lotus pedestals.

Domestic altar with the Last Supper, anonymous, c. 1550 The altar is made up of a postament, a quadrangular center piece and a main frame with crown. On the postament cropped in the corners, two alabaster columns rest with composite capitals, which carry a main frame with the pilasters behind it. They close a relief with the Last Supper, on the sides and at the top of a narrow egg list. The Supper takes place in an interior, the rear wall of which is formed from arches, resting on scanning pilasters. Against this is the throne on which Christ was seated with John for himself. They are in the midst of the apostles on a set table, on which square 'pewter' slices, a bowl with lamb, a chalice and bread. There are three apostles on the benches in front of the table, including Judas, recognizable by the money pouch, to whom Christ awardes the bread. Afghanistan: Kushan worshipper and the deity Pharro, Bactria, 3rd Century CE. The Kushan Empire was originally formed in the early 1st century CE under Prince Kujula Kadphises in the territories of ancient Bactria on either side of the Oxus River in what is now northern Afghanistan, southern Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The Kushan kings were a branch of the Yuezhi confederation (possibly intermarried with local families) and they had diplomatic contacts with Rome, Persia and Han China. The empire declined from the 3rd century and fell to the Sassanid and Gupta empires.
