Frieze and ceiling 1881-82 Virgilio Tojetti Italian In 1881, Arabella Worsham, then-mistress of railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, hired George A. Schastey & Co. to decorate her townhouse at 4 West Fifty-Fourth Street in New York City. The resulting artistic interiors would have been considered the height of cosmopolitan style in the early 1880s and were emblematic of Worshams quest to fashion her identity as a wealthy, prominent woman of taste. When Worsham married Huntington in 1884, she sold the house, fully furnished, to John D. and Laura Spelman Rockefeller, who made few subsequent changes to the decorations. Following Mr. Rockefellers death in 1937, the house was demolished, yet some furnishings, large-scale architectural elements, and three interiors were preserved, and the rooms were donated to local museums by John D. Rockefeller Jr. Every room in the house had an elaborately painted ceiling and frieze. Those in the dressing room—hand-painted and stenciled on canvas—are

(69.85 x 69.06 x 2.7 cm), Gilt and painted plaster, United States, 19th century, Combining an office tower and a theater, the seventeen-story Schiller Building was the tallest building Adler and Sullivan constructed. The 1,286-seat theater filled the central portion up to the sixth floor. For the ornamental plaster vaults and panels, Sullivan planned a repeating pattern of stars surround by interlocking circles with lush vines and leaves in green and gold. This theme continued in the large and ornate proscenium arch. As in all Sullivan's architecture, the ornamental motif was repeated throughout the building, both inside and out, to achieve an integrated design.

Quilt 1820-50 British Patchwork quilting is usually associated with America, but it also has a tradition in Europe, particularly in Germany and England. The number of differently patterned printed cottons used in this quilt top, ranging in date from the 1790s to the 1820s, suggests that the maker had access to sample books or samples. Although such a wealth of fabrics offered a design opportunity, the small size of each sample could have been limiting. The maker, however, turned this challenge into a strength. For some of the hexagons, motifs were cut from several patterns and juxtaposed for a controlled kaleidoscopic effect; others were composed of different color combinations of the same design. In the outer guard borders, the tentlike shapes are each made of a different fabric; that may perhaps indicate the prevalent sample size. The large floral motifs and the central bird are executed in a different technique, "broderie perse," in which the forms are removed from larger pieces of

Tile with Niche Design dated A.H. 712/ A.D. 1312-13 Evoking an architectural mihrab niche, the design of this tile includes columns topped by a multilobed arch. The vigorous calligraphic inscriptions that surround and fill the interior of the "niche" comprise an evocation to the Chahardah Ma'sum (Fourteen Infallibles)—naming the twelve Shi'i Imams and the family of the Prophet Muhammad. The date of this tile places it within the reign of the Ilkhanid ruler Sultan Uljaitu, who was known to have embraced Shi'i Islam.. Tile with Niche Design. dated A.H. 712/ A.D. 1312-13.
