The Virgin and Child Seated at the Foot of a Tree 1522 Jan Gossart (called Mabuse) Netherlandish As he so often did in his paintings, Gossart combined Renaissance and Gothic motifs in his prints. Here, the figure types derive from Italian Renaissance sculpture. Most notably, the child's unusual gesture, with his arm turned backward, derives from The Madonna of the Steps, a relief by Michelangelo (1490-92, Casa Buonarroti, Florence). The nervous folds of the drapery are typical of Northern Gothic art. The theme itself derives from a number of prints created by Gossart's German contemporary Albrecht Dürer, who visited the Netherlands in 1520-21 and consequently inspired a number of Netherlandish artists to make prints after his work.. Maternity. Artist: Benjamin West (American, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania 1738-1820 London). Dimensions: 14 5/16 x 11 9/16 in. (36.4 x 29.4 cm). Date: 1784.West was a prolific painter of historical scenes and a tireless draftsman, but seldom did he lavish such care on a drawing as he did here. For West, this work is unusual for its allegorical subject, Caritas (Charity), or Maternal Love, whose long tradition was briefly revived in the late eighteenth century, prompted by the popularity of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's writings on the mother's primary role in childhood education. The remarkable delicacy of both contour and modeling, as well as the thin paper bearing this image, suggest that West made the drawing as the basis for an engraving, though no corresponding print is known.
