Anthony Van Dyck(1599-1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist. He became the leading court painter in England and is renowned for his portraits of Charles I of England and his family. This portraitshows one of Charles I's children and is possibly the best known and one of the most deservedly popular of the master child's portraits. It will bear comparison for charm and delicacy of handling with any of the productions of other great Englsh masters. It was largelyt after a study of Van Dyck's wonderful pictures of children that Gainsborough formed his last and greatest manner.

A Boy with a Cat--Morning. Artist: Thomas Gainsborough (British, Sudbury 1727-1788 London). Dimensions: 59 1/4 x 47 1/2 in. (150.5 x 120.7 cm). Date: 1787.The canvas had as its pendant a painting of two children, one seated and one standing, warming themselves before a cottage fire. The latter has disappeared but its composition is known from an 1809 mezzotint engraving. The pair formed part of a group of rustic paintings of working-class children much admired in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as "fancy pictures." Date: ca. 1826.Peale's studies of French Neoclassical painting during a sojourn in Paris (1808-10) helped him to break free from the British eighteenth-century conventions that he had learned from his portraitist father, Charles Willson Peale. Peale's resplendent palette, along with his ability to render warm flesh tones, manipulate light, and emphasize textures suggests that while in France, he studied not only the works of modern painters, but also paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, and other Baroque masters. Boy with a Sword 1861 Edouard Manet French Manets stepson, Léon Koëlla-Leenhoff, recalled that he had posed for this picture in 1861, when he was about ten years old. Manet dressed him in a seventeenth-century costume, adding a period sword as a prop—a tribute to the great Spanish painters he admired, notably Velázquez. Critics reviewed the work favorably on the five occasions that Manet exhibited it between 1862 and 1872.
