Marguerite-Thérèse (Margot) Berard (1874-1956) 1879 Auguste Renoir French Renoir depicts the five-year-old daughter of his devoted patron Paul Berard, a diplomat and banker whom he met in 1878. The artist often summered at the Berards' country home in Wargemont, near Dieppe, on the Normandy coast, where he painted decorative pictures for the house and a veritable family album of portraits, ranging from formal commissions to more intimate works that reflect a genuine fondness for the four Berard children. According to Margot's nephew, Renoir painted this spirited portrait to "cheer her up" after a disagreeable lesson with her German tutor had brought her to tears.. These two paintings are from a group of family portraits commissioned by the Brooklyn businessman John Southwick from George Baker, Jr., a prominent portraitist in New York. Bakers contemporaries credited his success to his early work as a miniature painter, a craft he learned from his father. Such training helped the younger Baker hone his skills at modeling the human figure, creating delicate color effects, and fostering a sense of intimacy in full-scale oil portraits. American Art 1877

Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Antoine Le Moyne 1747 France. Jean Baptiste Perronneau was one of the most unique portraitists in oil or pastel of the eighteenth century. He worked throughout Europe and Russia, but died a pauper in Holland. One of his most compelling early works is this pastel portrait, exhibited in the Salon of 1747, of the eldest son of his friend the sculptor Jean Baptiste Le Moyne the Younger. In this animated expression of youth, Perronneau used green shading to attain a naturalistic, lively face. The little boy, Jean Baptiste Antoine Le Moyne (1742-1781), grew up to be a judge, counselor to the king, and lieutenant in the Admiralty in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.. English artist Sir. J. E, Millais (1829-1896) paitined My First Sermon in 1862-1863. The ittle girl is Millais' five-year-old daughter Effie, and it was the first time Millais had used any of his children as the model for a painting. She is sitting in one of the high-backed pews in All Saints Church in Kingston-on-Thames, which Millais hurried to paint in December 1862 shortly before they were removed. The painting hangs in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London.

Date: ca. 1810.Pepito's father, Rafael Costa de Quintana, was doctor to King Ferdinand VII; his mother was the daughter of Jaime Bonells, doctor to the Alba family. The portrait is most closely related to works that Goya painted shortly after 1810 and seems to allude to the Spanish War of Independence, 1808-14. Pepito's jacket is tailored in imitation of a soldier's uniform, and his hair is cut in the Napoleonic fashion. Le Petit Saint-Jean, 1890. Berthe Morisot (French, 1841-1895). Pastel; 57.1 x 38.1 cm (22 1/2 x 15 in.). In the spring of 1890 Berthe Morisot and her husband, Eugène Manet, rented a house with a garden overlooking the Seine River in the rural French town of Mézy. Morisot worked in the attic studio while the pair was there. A young boy from the village served as the model for this pastel, one of several studies for a full-length painting of Saint John the Baptist with his cross. In this drawing, Morisot developed the loose and sketchy marks that would characterize her final canvas.

Date: 1790.In 1771, Peale painted a large portrait (whereabouts unknown) of his wife, Rachel (1744-1790), with their third child, Eleanor (1770-1773), to celebrate the child's first year of life. Their first two children had died in infancy. At the time, the artist wrote to his friend Edmond Jenings, "I have a fond Wife and Child and more coming, which my success in the Art I hope will enable me to provide for."
