Wellington Mark IC, Z9099 C, of No. 38 Squadron RAF, in flight over the Western Desert, probably while based at Shallufa, Egypt. Z9099 was one of several Wellingtons specially converted for use as torpedo bomber/minelayers by the Squadron. It was shot down by enemy fighters near Fort Maddalena, Libya, on 9 March 1942.

Army Tests Jap Interceptor -- This six-bladed pusher type Japanese interceptor plane, called the Shindin, is undergoing evaluation by technical intelligence, Air material command, engineers at Wright Field, Ohio. Designed as a high-altitude bomber-interceptor, it is the sole surviving aircraft of this type. October 4, 1949.

Double-Barrelled Superbooster -- Jumbo-sized exhaust pipes, housing afterburners, are attached to the twin-jet engines of the Air Force's new Northrop Scorpion F-89 all-weather interceptor. The afterburners, a comparatively new aircraft powerplant development, are expected to greatly increase the Scorpion's rate of climb. They are attached to jet engines to provide additional thrust for brief intervals the Scorpion is being inspected here at the Northrop plant at Hawthorne, calif. April 16, 1950

New Supersonic Jet Engine was First Flight - The Short Sperrin with Gyron engine just after its take off. The new engine is in the enlarged lower port nacelle.First flight of the De Havilland Gyron Jet engine in the short Sperrin bomber was recently announced. The Royal Navy during the Second World War A Fairey Barracuda II (P 9926) from Lee-on-Solent Fleet Air Arm Station, with torpedo, in flight. The Fairey Barracuda torpedo bomber is a combination of dive and torpedo bomber, and is the newest to come into service with the Fleet Air Arm. The wooden plane that steadied the torpedo before it struck the water and broke off can be clearly seen at the rear of the weapon.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War A new American built Grumman Avenger three seater torpedo-bomber taxi-ing with wings folded at HMS SPARROWHAWK, the Royal Naval Air Station at Hatston. The pilot will open the wings on the way to the take-off point. Note the fact that the torpedo is fully enclosed so as to improve the aerodynamics of the aircraft.

Brabazon' Flies Over Farnborough -- The Brabazon flying over a Handley Page Marathon I (on the ground) at Farnborough to-day. The world's largest civil landplane, the 130-ton Bristol 'Brabazon I', flew over Farnborough Aerodrome, Hampshire, to-day (Thursday), making a low-level run down the full length of the field. The 'Brabazon', which made her maiden flight only last Sunday, had flown from Filton, Bristol, to Farnborough, where the tenth Flying Display and Exhibition organized by the Society

The Fastest Ship-Plane In Existence -- Photograph taken over Surrey shows a ***** of the Grumman Gulfhawk (G.22) single *****, the faster ship-palne now in existence.It is the type as used by the United States Navy Marines.The fuel and oil systems are so ***** the Gulfhawk could stay on its back ***** an hour and its retracable wheels make difficult for an observer on the ground to ***** which way up it is flying so the top wing ***** with distinguishing marks.Its speed is over three hundred ***** an hour. Royal Air Force Training Command, 1939-1940. Fokker F.XXXVI, G-AFZR, and Fokker F.XXIIs, G-AFZP and G-AFXR, of No. 1 Air Observer and Navigation School, parked in front of the airport buildings at Prestwick, Ayrshire. G-AFZR (formerly PH-AJA) was purchased from the Dutch airline KLM by the RAF in 1939. It was flown and maintained by Scottish Aviation Ltd, Prestwick, under its civil registration, and served alongside the F.XXIIs as a navigational trainer, initially with No. 12 Elementary Flying Training School, followed by 1 AONS. On 21 May 1940, G-AFZR crashed on take off from Prestwick.

Claimed to be the nearest thing to the maintain as well as luxurious for the passengers - the plane has four 2,100 horsepower engines giving a top speed of 315 miles an hour and a cruising speed of nearly 300.The standard day version will seat 52 persons, while the sleeper version will accommodate 26, with two sit-up passengers. On short trips, however the plane can carry as many as 70 passengers. ***** service, accommodations are normally provided ***** persons.The crew numbers ***** two stewardesses.With air-condition ***** which would be adequate for a 20-roomed ***** the DC-6 is the first airliner to be regulated ***** as well as for heating and cooling. Streamlined Mailplane -- Bullet-shaped design of the fuselage and the four Gipsy Twelve 505/525 h.p. (510/530 c.v.) air-cooled engines is particularly noticeable in this photograph of the second graceful Albatross long-range monoplane. Following a "one-in-a-million" accident to the first Albatross on overload trials, a straightforward reinforcement - weighing only 12.5 1b.
