Bust of King Frederick the Great. Frederick the Great reigned as King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786. He was a fine connoisseur of porcelain and stimulated the growth of the porcelain factory in Berlin. This unglazed porcelain bust imitates marble. It was probably in the possession of Wilhelmina of Prussia, wife of the Dutch stadtholder William V and a niece of Frederick the Great.

There is no attempt to conform to an ideal or a standard of beauty. Renaissance sculptors often played up the singularity of a person’s face as a way of emphasizing the importance of the individual. This artistic approach, which had strong political underpinnings, harked back to the time of the ancient Roman Republic.

Bust of a Nobleman in Armor 1620-1630 France. This portrait bust of an unknown nobleman in armor, sporting the stiff ruff characteristic of menís fashion in Europe in the first quarter of the 17th century, was once thought to portray the Genoese aristocrat Ambrogio Spinola or an anonymous naval officer. Previously attributed to the French Mannerist sculptor Germain Pilon (1535ñ1590), it currently bears an attribution to Pietro Tacca, court sculptor to the Medici grand dukes in the first half of the 17th century. However, the immediacy and supplely rendered flesh of this portrait suggest that it was executed by an artist associated with Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598ñ1680), the most famous Italian sculptor of the period.. John Watts ca. 1830, cast by 1906 Robert Ball Hughes Hughes apparently received a commission to execute a portrait of John Watts soon after his arrival in New York in 1829. Watts (1749-1836), a prominent New York leader, had been speaker of the New York State Assembly as well as a member of Congress and the first judge for Westchester County. It seems likely that it was the bust of Watts that Hughes exhibited at the 1830 annual exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, listing it only as An Eminent Member of the New York Bar.” In early 1906 Watt’s grandson General John Watts de Peyster offered to give the Metropolitan Museum the plaster bust of Watts, or a bronze cast of it. The supposed Moyenmoutier origin and similar sculptures in Basel and the Upper Rhine region suggest a creative, itinerant carver working in eastern France.
