Date: ca. 1597-1602.This study is dazzling for the energy of its drawing, economy of means, and monumentality of expression. It was preparatory for a triton that appears at the extreme left of a large oblong fresco Thetis Carried to the Bridal Chamber of Peleus (The Triumph of Galatea) on the ceiling of the gallery of the Palazzo Farnese, Rome, a project begun in 1597. Annibale invented most of the robust figures in the gigantic Farnese Gallery fresco cycle - nearly ninety of his drawings for it are extant -- exploring their poses from live nude models in numerous large-scale studies executed with the technique seen here. Many of the cartoons (full-scale drawings) and a few scenes of the finished frescoes, including Thetis Carried to the Bridal Chamber, however, were the work of his elder brother, Agostino. Reclining Female Nude early 17th century Domenico Tintoretto Italian Domenico was the son and pupil of the renowned Venetian master, Jacopo Tintoretto. While the influence of Jacopos rhythmical line is evident in the drawings of his son, Domenico developed an individual style of draftsmanship characterized by softer and more naturalistic modeling, as illustrated in this study of a female nude, one in a series depicting heavily foreshortened figures in various reclining poses, including several others in the Lehman Collection. These studies may have served as reference points for the voluptuous, recumbent figures of Venus and Danae that abound in paintings by the Tintoretto workshop Domenicos series of female nudes epitomize the primacy of drawing after live models in the Tintoretto workshop.. Nude Woman Resting on a Cushion. This drawing of a recumbent nude most closely resembles a rendering from classical mythology, for instance a slumbering nymph. But just look at how Rembrandt delineated the contours of the woman and the cushions with powerful strokes, and made the womans sagging skin tangible with soft shadows. This testifies to his keen power of observation and meticulous recording of reality.

Studies of Hands, 1770s-1780s, Attributed to Louis Roland Trinquesse, French, 1745 - c. 1800, 14 3/4 x 10 3/8 in. (37.47 x 26.35 cm) (image), Red chalk on white laid paper, France, 18th century, This previously unidentified drawing has recently been attributed to Louis Roland Trinquesse, a French genre and portrait painter whose accomplished red chalk studies were avidly collected in his lifetime. The depiction of hands proved difficult for Trinquesse, who often painted them as clumsy and misshapen. This shortcoming may have prompted the artist to execute some hand studies from life. His skillful handling of the chalk in this sheet and meticulous description of parts of the hands, as well as drapery and buttoned sleeves contrast with its awkward portrayal of some of the fingers. The largest hand, for instance, is shown with a disproportionately long thumb, and the hand in the middle in the sheet is also distorted, with an oddly shaped, extended thumb and arthritically strained joints a

Reclining Male Figure 1560s Jacopo Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti) Italian One of the leading Venetian artists of the sixteenth century, Jacopo Tintoretto was celebrated for the monumental narrative scenes he painted in numerous churches and confraternities throughout the city. These paintings are densely populated with dynamic, twisting, and sharply foreshortened figures. As a preparatory step in the creation of these complex figural poses, Tintoretto produced numerous studies on paper. The reclining pose of this figure was probably inspired by Michelangelos monumental sculptures in the Medici Chapel in Florence, small-scale copies of which Tintoretto kept as models in his studio, according to his seventeenth-century biographer. With gridlines to aid in the transfer of the design to canvas, this study may have been preparatory for the similarly posed figure of Saint Peter that appears in a painting of the Agony in the Garden (Private Collection).. Hermaphrodite as Caryatid.The hermaphrodite (a person both male and female) was designed for the decoration of the Hall of Constantine at the Vatican. The yoke on the shoulders refers to the motto of Pope Leo X, who commissioned the work: For my yoke is easy and my burden is light’. An androgynous figure was viewed in the Renaissance as embodying the divine, combining the beauty of both genders.
