Shirley Chisholm (1924 2005) was an American politician, educator, and author.[1 In 1968, she became the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress, [2 and she represented New York's 12th Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she became the first black candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination

Bessie Coleman (1892-1926), was an early African American pilot. She started flying in France at the Ecole d'Aviation des Freres Caudon at Le Crotoy. From 1922 to 1926, she did exhibition flying, refusing to fly for segregated events. She died in a test flight in 1926.
