Portrait of Henrick Hooft. The demand for portraits in the Netherlands was great in the 17th century. Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt was the most productive and successful portraitist in Delft: according to a somewhat exaggerated contemporary account, the artist painted around 10,000 portraits. His fame extended beyond the city limits. Both in their twenties, Henrick Hooft and Aegje Hasselaer of Amsterdam had themselves eternalized in paint by him on the occasion of their marriage.

. As young artists, Rembrandt and Lievens shared a workshop in Leiden. Lievens painted his friend wearinga metal gorget and a beret. Rembrandt also portrayed himself in the same outfit a number of times during this period. In this little painting Lievens not only recorded his friends likeness, but also imitated his style, adoptingRembrandts characteristic dark colours, powerful contrasts of light and shade and tiny scratches in the paint.

Willem van Outhoorn (1691-1704). The highest-ranking Dutch East India Company (VOC) official in Asia was the governor-general. He presided in the Castle of Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia), a fort built by the Dutch. The assembly hall in the Castle of Batavia was the centre of Dutch power in Asia. The walls were hung with portraits of all of the governors-general. Most of the 18th-century examples shown here were painted in Asia, often by anony¬mous artists.
