Jeremiah Platt 1767 John Mare Jeremiah Platt (1744-1811) was a successful New York businessman, a partner with his brother-in-law Samuel Broome in the mercantile firm of Broome, Platt and Company. This painting cost 8 guiness, plus £3.3s for a three quarter frame Burnished Gold and 7s for a case. George liked the painting so much that he had Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) paint him another. This picture was hung in the Rectory at Hampton Lucy for a time. It is now possibly in the family wing. The second painting cost the same as the first.

Elias Hasket Derby (August 16, 1739 September 8, 1799) was among the wealthiest and most celebrated of post-Revolutionary merchants in Salem, Massachusetts, and owner of the Grand Turk, the first New England vessel to trade directly with China. Derby is often referred to as 'King Derby' or as America's first millionaire. However, it is improbable that Elias Hasket Derby was known as King Derby during his lifetime. Nathaniel Hawthorne bestowed the title on him in 'The Scarlet Letter' (p. 4). As for being America's first millionaire, Derby was but one of a number of highly successful Massachusetts merchants of the period.

Luman Reed 1835 Asher Brown Durand American One of early America's great art patrons, the dry goods merchant Luman Reed of New York offered critical support to the careers of Durand, the landscape painter Thomas Cole, and the genre painter William Sidney Mount, and built a gallery in his house for the display of their work and that of the old masters. From Durand, Reed commissioned portraits of the nation's presidents and eventually encouraged the artist to abandon his original career as an engraver to become a painter. Still, he would not live to see Durand blossom as a landscape artist. Reed died untimely, just the year after the completion of this solid likeness. His passing was sorely mourned; Durand reminded Cole in a letter that Reed was "the man whose equal we shall never see again." The artist did not exaggerate, but Reed's partner, Jonathan Sturges, for whom this portrait was painted, became an important patron in his own right of Durand, Cole, and their colleagues.. Luman Ree
