Portrait of Louis XV Made 1739 Germany. Jacques Gautier DíAgoty worked as an apprentice in Jacob Christoph Le Blonís Paris studio for a few weeks in 1738. After Le Blonís death, he argued that he had improved Le Blonís color mezzotint process by adding a fourth plate and opportunistically claimed the exclusive right to use the process, by order of Louis XV. Gautier DíAgoty also insisted thatóunlike Le Blonóhis prints did not rely on hand retouching or highlighting. This portrait of their mutual patron includes both a black plate and etched white highlighting in the hair. The red pigment applied to the lips has faded, and so determining whether Le Blonís portrait seems closer to a waxed figure than Gautier DíAgotyís anatomy studies is for the viewer to judge.. Date: 1785.Eugne Foulon d'cotier must have commissioned the portrait to commemorate his appointment in June 1785 as Intendant of Guadeloupe. It was painted in Vestier's typically minute style prior to the sitter's departure for the French colonial island that November. Self-portrait. As a former actor and scene painter, Troost understood illusion. In this self-portrait he gazes from a mirror at himself and at us. The curtain, pedestal, palette and drawing on blue paper create a sense of depth. Every detail testifies to his technical skill. Notice how he conveyed the fine batiste cloth of his fashionable jabot - the frill of ruffles attached to his shirt - with a single stroke of white paint.

Painted in two major colonial American centers, these portraits from Boston and Mexico City (then New Spain) share a formality of pose and an emphasis on fine costume that reveal a common source in European portraiture. John Haskins holds his hand on his hip, in a pose of authority found in Elizabethan portraits. Nevertheless, this upright barrel maker known as Honest John Haskins” was a modest patron when compared to his wealthy and ambitious Mexican counterpart.
