Inspired by a series of ground-breaking Hamlet lithographs that Delacroix had created one year earlier, the younger artist opted for the more linear technique of etching. His expressive conception of form had been learned in Ingres's studio then developed under Delacroix. In the series, key exchanges offer a compressed summary of much of the play, with a final cluster devoted to the tragic conclusion. Here, Othello prepares to depart on a campaign and entrusts Desdemona to the protection of Iago, whom he mistakenly trusts.. Although a concern with poor education pervades the Caprichos, Goyas specific target here is the women traditionally responsible for passing beliefs from one generation to the next. Implicating women in their childrens ignorance and superstition, the print alludes to the bogeyman—who wears fashionably pointy shoes beneath his robe—as the mothers illicit lover. Hamlet Contemplating Yoricks Skull 1828 Eugène Delacroix Act 5, scene 1 of "Hamlet" in which the gravedigger preparing Ophelias burial site unearths the skull of Yorick, a jester from Hamlets childhood, preoccupied Delacroix throughout his career.
