It was the first Spanish warship to pass through the canal, bound for the Philippines. At one point, Captain Alejandro Arias Salgado found himself obliged to offload the ship's artillery as its draught was too deep. Launching the Buoy from the Bow of the Great Eastern on August 8th, 1865 1865-66 Robert Charles Dudley British One of the 19th century's great technological achievements was to lay a telegraphic cable beneath the Atlantic, allowing messages to speed back and forth between North America and Europe in minutes, rather than ten or twelve days by steamer. An initially successful attempt in 1858, led by Cyrus W. Field and financed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, failed after three weeks. Two working cables were finally laid in July and September 1866, the result of repeated efforts by the indefatigable Field, a cadre of engineers, technicians, and sailors, two groups of financial backers, and significant help from the British and United States navies. Dudley documented the process in a series of watercolors and oils, this example showing the Great Eastern launching a buoy to mark the position of the cable broken and lost on August 2, 1865, six hundred miles from Newfoundland. Terra Nova was a whaler and polar expedition ship. She is best known for carrying the 1910 British Antarctic Expedition, Robert Falcon Scott's last expedition.

Ships before the Coast. In the 17th century painters specialized in specific genres. For instance, Willem van de Velde became a marine painter, perhaps even the most successful one ever. He portrayed large, spectacular naval battles as well as small, tranquil coastal views, like we see here. Modest commercial vessels lie still on the smooth-as-glass surface of the water. Somewhat further back in the middle ground are two warships calmly awaiting what is to come.

Seen here is Shackletons Ship, the Nimrod, among the ice in McMurdo Sound, the Winter Land Quarters of the British Antarctic Expedition. Shackleton was a British polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. He was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton went into McMurdo Sound in 1908. He died in 1922.
