Marble statue of an old woman A.D. 14-68 Roman Copy of a Greek work of the second century B.C.During the Hellenistic period, artists became concerned with the accurate representation of childhood, old age, and even physical deformity. The range of subject matter was extended to include genre-like figures from the fringes of society. Fine, large-scale statues of fishermen, peasants, and aged courtesans became valued religious dedications, sometimes placed in a park-like setting within thesanctuary of the god. Although this statue is known familiarly as The Old Market Woman, it probably represents an aged courtesan on her way to a festival of Dionysos, the god of wine. Her delicate sandals and the ample material in her thin, elaborately draped chiton are a far cry from the rough garb of a peasant woman. The ivy wreath on her head marks her association with Dionysos, and the basket of fruit and the two chickens must be dedicatory gifts to the god or simply her own provisions for a long da

Date: 3rd century.This refined Buddha, the finest example of this iconic image type to appear on the market in at least the last decade, is the product of one of the great workshops active in the central Gandharan region of modern day Pakistan. It is of exceptional quality and must have been done by a master sculptor as is evidenced by the figure's beautifully carved face, dramatically cascading drapery folds, naturalistic hair and finely finished surface. Kneeling Angel ca. 1430-40 South Netherlandish or German This elegant angel was originally part of a group of statuettes depicting either the Annunciation to the Virgin or Christ as the Man of Sorrows; if the latter, the angel's crossed hands may have held Instruments of Passion. The angel's refined features, the loose curls of long hair, and the fluid treatment of the folds in the thin drapery recall a group of alabaster sculptures from a retable with the Crucifixion and the Twelve Apostles formerly in Santa Maria delle Grazie, Rimini- Covignano (now in the Städtische Galerie Liebieghaus, Frankfurt). The anonymous artists responsible for the ensemble probably worked in the Burgundian Lowlands or the Rhineland, but, as the Rimini altar suggests, they appear to have produced many sculptures in alabaster for export. The personal style of the Rimini Master is closely linked to the widespread, so- called International Gothic style of about 1400, seen in this and many other alabaster statue

The monasteries of the Gandharan region commissioned large-scale bodhisattvas in recognition of the growing popularity of these interventionist deities, which embody Buddhist compassion. The cult of Avalokiteshvara represents the highest expression of this sentiment. Probably from the Sahri-Bahlol monastery, this large stone torso, from a figure originally about ten feet tall, is a spectacular survivor from that era. Sensitively modeled and dressed in a draped monks robe, it reflects a lingering memory of contact with the Hellenistic West. Fragment of a marble relief with a Nike late 5th century B.C. Greek This figure must represent a Nike (the personification of victory) for a few feathers of her right wing are visible carved in low relief on the background. The wind-blown drapery that clings to her body and the ridgelike folds that form beautiful curved patterns are typical of the elegant mannered art of the late fifth and early fourth centuries B.C. Although this twisting figure brings to mind those on the reliefs that decorated the Nike Parapet at the entrance to the Athenian Akropolis, it must have been part of a metope or relief from a building or other temple constructed at approximately the same period.. The popular type of sculpture seen here showed young boys who served as acolytes at religious ceremonies.The identification of this figure as a camillus, an attendant at sacrifices who was chosen from the noblest families, is based on comparisons with other stages and reliefs, most notably those of the famous monument, the Ara Pacis of Augustus. According to Roman tradition, a camillus had to be below the age of puberty, and both parents must be alive.
