Portrait Head of a Woman 117 CE-130 CE Italy. This womanís name is unknown, but her portrait indicates that she was likely a member of the imperial family. She wears a tall ornamental headband, typically reserved for goddesses and imperial women. Her elaborate hairstyle, with distinct locks woven around the headband, would have required the services of a skilled hairdresser. Head of Aphrodite (Capitoline Type). Unknown 1st century B.C. An over life-size head of the Capitoline type Aphrodite. The head is broken off at the neck and turned slightly to the left. The face is oval shaped with little indication of facial bone structure. The nose is mostly missing and most of the polished surface has been stripped away on the left side of the face. The hair is rendered in thick wavy strands. It is parted in the middle and pulled back in to a bun at the back of the head. The frontmost strands of hair are gathered and tied into a bow resting on the top of the head. Two curly tendrils fall in front of each ear. The backs of the hair, bow and bun are only summarily carved.

Marble portrait of the emperor Augustus ca. A.D. 14-37 Roman When Octavian took the title of Augustus in 27 B.C., an official portrait was created that embodied the qualities he wished to project, and hundreds of versions of it were disseminated throughout the Empire. The features are individualized, but the overall effect is of calm, elevated dignity and brings to mind Classical Greek art of the fifth century B.C. With this studied understatement, the portraits could evoke the values of the glorious past of Athens and at the same time present the emperor simply as primus inter pares, first among equals.. Marble head of a goddess. Culture: Greek. Dimensions: H. 21 3/4 in. (55.25 cm). Date: 4th century B.C..In antiquity, heads were often carved separately from the statues for which they were intended. The head was made with a convex tenon that could be set into a specially prepared cavity in the statue. The juncture was concealed by a line of drapery. This finely carved head of a young woman must represent a goddess because of its colossal size. Persephone (the daughter of Demeter and wife of Hades, the god of the underworld) and Hygeia (the daughter of Asklepios, the god of medicine) were often represented with hair separated into thick coils pulled back to the top of the head and tied loosely in a knot. Such a knot was probably affixed to this head using three large holes that remain in the back. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Roman bust, possibly of Agrippa. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (63-12 BC), Roman statesman and naval and military commander. Agrippa was a friend, son-in-law, and deputy of the Emperor Augustus. He won naval victories at Mylae and Naulochus (36 BC) and over Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC. He later served the empire as Governor of Syria. The artist is unknown.

For example, female masks may have coiffures that combine Roman arrangements of the upper part of the hair with long corkscrew locks that were considered typically Egyptian. Despite the seeming individuality of the masks, most faces were made in a mold. Distinguishing details were worked in the plaster with a spatula or knife.
