The Virgin and Child with Saint Joseph, Attendant Angels, and a Group of Supplicants. Artist: Federico Zuccaro (Zuccari) (Italian, Sant'Angelo in Vado 1540/42-1609 Ancona). Dimensions: 11 9/16 x 9 1/16in. (29.3 x 23cm). Date: 1540/41-1609.While not yet connected with any known composition by Federico Zuccaro, this dynamic study certainly represents a well thought plan for an altarpiece. A group of donors is seen at lower left, blessed by the Christ Child, standing beside the towering figure of the Virgin. The same composition is recorded on a double-sided drawing at the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. 12281; 25.4 x 17.3 cm) with the Virgin and Child and St. Joseph on one side and a truncated, roughly sketched version of the entire composition on the verso. Drawn in pen and brown ink and wash, the Met study dates rather late in Federico's career, around 1580, when the artist was back to Rome and mostly active at the Vatican with decoration for the Pauline Chapel. Death of Socrates ca. 1782-92 Jean-Baptiste Joseph Wicar Born in Lille, Wicar studied art in the French capital, entering the studio of Jacques-Louis David in 1781. He accompanied David to Rome in 1784 and, with the exception of two brief periods, spent the remainder of his life in Italy. He achieved success as a painter of portraits and history subjects in the style of his master. He was elected to the Accademia di S Luca in Rome as well as academies in Naples, Milan, and Bologna. Wicar was also an important collector of drawings, building up a series of collections, one of which formed the core of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille.Here, a quickly executed compositional study in black chalk shows the ancient philosopher Socrates in prison, holding his chalice of poison and addressing a large assembled group of acolytes and observers. Steps can be seen in the arched opening at right and a diagonal line indicates the fall of light against the back wall.. Death of Socrates 706004
