Arthur Gilbert succeeded in purchasing this snuffbox with diamond flowers from the N.Y. jeweller Harry Winston but only after he had bought a set of yellow diamonds to establish himself as an important customer. The scene carved in hardstones on the base is adapted from a painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) of a water spaniel and a swan, the latter replaced with a colourful mallard.

These two paintings by Aleksandr Yakovlev show the artists key role in ushering in a new classicism in post- Revolutionary Russian art. Some proposed the French novel Paul and Virginie by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814), in which the teenage protagonists run for shelter in a rainstorm, using the heroine's overskirt as an impromptu umbrella; others suggested the romance Daphnis and Chloe by the ancient Greek writer Longus. New York collector and Metropolitan Museum benefactor Catharine Lorillard Wolfe commissioned the work under the guidance of her cousin John Wolfe, one of Cot's principal patrons.
