Eve after the Fall 1886 France. Auguste Rodinís sculpture Eve owes its genesis to The Gates of Hell, the artistís major commission from the French government in 1880. The associations posed by the sculptural portals of that project led Rodin back to the art of Lorenzo Ghiberti and Michelangelo, particularly their depiction of biblical stories from the book of Genesis. A number of elements from the Gatesósuch as The Thinker, Adam, and Eveógradually evolved into independent works. In particular, Eve recalls the most sculptural of Renaissance paintings Michelangeloís panels from the Sistine Chapel Ceiling and Masaccioís Expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Its beauty and fame are mentioned three times in ancient literature, and over twenty-five full-size marble copies are known. This copy was owned by the Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani of Rome, who, during the first third of the seventeenth century, formed one of the earliest European collections of ancient art. Scholars had not yet identified this statue type as the Polykleitan Diadoumenos, and an incorrect head and arms were added to complete the figure. These have since been removed. Date: 1869-70; carved 1872.American Neoclassical sculptors frequently mined classical mythology for thematic inspiration. In book 4 of the "Metamorphoses," the Roman poet Ovid tells the story of Clytie, a water nymph who was abandoned by Apollo, the sun god. Clytie gazed inconsolably at the sun for nine days, languishing nude, without food or drink. For her constancy, she was changed into a sunflower so that her face would forever follow the sun as it moved across the sky. Rinehart subtly evoked Ovid's story by depicting a drooping sunflower in Clytie's right hand. The tree stump with live sunflower plants serves both to enhance the narrative and to offer tensile support for the marble figure. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Statue of Hercules (Lansdowne Herakles). Unknown about A.D. 125 The Greek hero Herakles carries a club over his left shoulder and holds a lionskin in his right hand. These objects help identify the figure, since Herakles was often depicted with a club and the skin of the Nemean Lion, which he killed as his first labor. As is typical for depictions of Greek heroes, the young Herakles is shown nude, since the Greeks considered male nudity to be the highest form of beauty. No other god or hero is as frequently depicted in Greek and Roman art as is Herakles. The Lansdowne Herakles very likely was inspired by a lost Greek statue, probably from the school of Polykleitos from the 300s B.C. Found in 1790 near the ruins of the villa of the Roman emperor Hadrian at Tivoli outside Rome, this statue was one of numerous copies of Greek sculpture commissioned by Hadrian, who loved Greek culture. Adam ca. 1490-95 Tullio Lombardo Tullio Lombardo was a member of a family of sculptors that included his father, Pietro, and brother Antonio. Through training and practice in Venice he developed a thorough understanding of classical art and created some of the first great sculptural statements of the High Renaissance. Orpheus and Eurydice modeled ca. 1887, carved 1893 Auguste Rodin French The mythical poet Orpheus braved the underworld to rescue his dead wife, Eurydice. The gods allowed her ghost to follow him and regain life, provided that Orpheus did not look at her until both had reached the sunlit earth. Rodin depicts Eurydices spirit floating in the underworlds dark entrance while Orpheus hesitates at the threshold. Because he cannot feel her phantom embrace, or hear her spectral voice, Orpheus turns to see if his beloved has come. An instant later he will glimpse her, and Eurydice will vanish. This exquisitely carved sculpture, one of the first Rodin works to come to America, is the only marble example of the composition.
