(82.55 x 46.99 cm), Plaster model, France, 19th century, These three dancing figures are a smaller, plaster version of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux's marble 'Dance,' which crowned the façade of the Paris Opéra. When the sculpture was unveiled, the public, accustomed to the idealism of the neoclassical style, was outraged. Carpeaux's realistic rendering of female flesh provoked vandalism and threats of removal. Carpeaux's erotically charged group at the same time generated fascination and interest, the sculptor produced numerous bronze, plaster, and terra-cotta copies of heads, single figures, and groups from his composition.

Date: 1804-6.This Perseus, purchased by Countess Valeria Tarnowska of Poland, is a replica of Canova's famed marble of Perseus in the Vatican, conceived about 1790 and first shown in 1801. Based freely on the Apollo Belvedere, which had been carried off to Paris under Napoleon, it was bought by Pope Pius VII and placed upon the pedestal where the Apollo had formerly stood. In the Museum's version, Canova has refined the ornamental details and aimed for a more lyrical effect than in the Vatican Perseus, a stylistic streamlining characteristic of his artistic process. Bather (from a fountain group) 1782 Jean Antoine Houdon French This sculpture is the sole remnant of an extraordinary fountain group acquired by Louis Philippe Joseph d'Orléans, duc de Chartres (the future duc d'Orléans), for his romantic "English" garden on the outskirts of Paris at Monceau (now the Parc Monceau). As described by a contemporary, the fountain consisted of a white marble basin, in the center of which was a woman bathing, in white marble, and behind her, in lead, a black servant woman pouring water over her mistress from a gilded ewer (see 32.100.159) Sadly, the group barely survived its owner's demise (the duke was guillotined in 1793) as the fountain was heavily vandalized during the Revolution.Houdon originally proposed the group as an acquisition for the crown, which declined to underwrite the expensive project. Its ultimate sponsor, the exceedingly wealthy and politically liberal duke, who would later acquire Houdon's bronze "Frileuse" (62.55), may have been attract

He grabs over his shoulder with the right hand to an arrow in the hanging sleeve on his back and holds the bow in the left. The belt, to which the arrow sleeve hangs, is sloping over the chest and holds the shaving jacket, a slip of which covers the shame. On the head a laurel wreath, on the feet of sandals. Behind him is the Python on the back and is a winch.
