Samson, whose strength came from his hair, has been shorn by his duplicitous lover, Delilah, and is set upon by the Philistines, who bind him and blind him. The focus of this dramatic and marvelously staged composition--a landmark in the artist's career--is the vigorously modeled back of Samson, struggling to free himself. It is one of several commissions from Cardinal Giacomo Serra, the papal legate to Ferrara. Serra was a notable collector in Rome and also promoted Rubens. The Rape of Tamar probably ca. 1640 Eustache Le Sueur French A pervasive classicism tempers the violence of this scene, which may represent the biblical Old Testament character Tamar about to be raped by her half brother Amnon. A freeze-frame effect is achieved through the use of staid yet dramatic gestures that Le Sueur derived from classical sculpture. They align perfectly with how fellow painter Charles Le Brun would soon theorize the best methods of representing historical narrative. Shortly after this work was painted, in 1648, both would become founding members of the Académie Royale, which sought to elevate painters intellectual and social standing in French society..
