The elastic poses, the use of stippling to define details such as clouds and turf, and the ruddy translucent lacquer all justify Anthony Radcliffes inclusion of the model among lesser works by Ferdinando Tacca.[1 Inferior examples are paired with equally unevenly cast representations of a scene from the Flight into Egypt in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; the Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence; and the Wernher Collection at Luton Hoo.[2 Even at their best, as here, the plaques do not suggest the atmospheric breadth achieved in Taccas masterpiece in relief, The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen, in Santo Stefano al Ponte, Florence,[3 and are probably to be dated somewhat earlier.[James D. Napoleon III on Horseback, Inaugurating the Boulevard de Strasbourg 1866 Medalist: François-Joseph-Hubert Ponscarme This is the specimen that was shown in the 1967 exhibition at the hôtel de la Monnaie in Paris, "La Medaille en France de Ponscarme a la fin de la Belle Epoque," an exhibition that did much to rekindle interest in Ponscarme and his contemporaries. The casting faithfully captures in an almost impressionistic way the flickering surfaces of the wax model that preceded it. The deed commemorated is the completion of one of the broad new thoroughfares of Second Empire Paris, the boulevard de Strasbourg, which leads to the Gare de l'Est, its pointed roof visible here at the vanishing point. St. Jerome in the Wilderness model ca. 1490 (possibly cast 16th century) Moderno (Galeazzo Mondella) Italian The model of this plaquette dates to about 1490, and is stylistically related to Modernos Pietà. A more accomplished and probably later variant exists in two very rare casts (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Musei Civici dArte e Storia, Brescia). Here the pose of Saint Jerome has been changed, the lion removed, the background extended, and the crucifix placed more to the right of the scene.
