Female statuette 17th century Workshop of Leonhard Kern Kern was a talented German carver whose individualistic classicizing style displays signs of his study in Italy. Court sculptor to the elector of Brandenburg, he specialized in small-scale works for collectors' cabinets, often producing variants in ivory, wood, and stone. The heavy features, calm stance, and compact, full body of this figure are typical of his naturalistic, monumental style, as is the simplicity of surface, markedly different from the more agitated and detailed approach of his contemporaries. Hornbill mask, early 20th century, 37 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 14 1/4 in. (95.3 x 19.1 x 36.2 cm), Wood, Mali, 20th century, Very long ago, according to Dogon mythology, a woman stumbled across a group of masked supernatural beings. Startled, they fled and left behind their masks and costumes, which the woman brought to her village. The men grew jealous, stole the masks from her, and made masking an exclusively male prerogative. The woman, called Yasigine ('sister of the masks'), is remembered by this type of maskthat’s her on toprepresenting the hornbill, whose picking of grains and stirring of dust is mimicked by the dancer during his performance.

The Scythians were an ancient Iranian people of horse-riding nomadic pastoralists who throughout Classical Antiquity dominated the Pontic-Caspian steppe, known at the time as Scythia. By Late Antiquity the closely-related Sarmatians came to dominate the Scythians in the west.

Jug 19th century French Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe.
