Study Models of Parts of the Body. This group of small models of parts of the body are carefully copied after famous sculptures, in particular by Michelangelo, in Florence and Rome. They came from the workshop of the Nijmegen sculptor Johan Gregor van der Schardt, who had a successful career in Italy, Nuremberg, and Copenhagen. They are extremely rare examples of the, in part autograph, study material of a 16th-century sculptor.

Hiawatha 1868 Edmonia Lewis Like many American sculptors of the nineteenth century, Lewis, an artist of African American and Native American (Anishinaabe/Ojibwe) descent, worked in Rome, Italy. Her multiracial identity and gender were formative in her selection of subjects. Between 1866 and 1872, she completed a series of marble sculptures on the popular theme of Hiawatha and Minnehaha, drawn from Henry Wadsworth Longfellows epic poem The Song of Hiawatha (1855). This cabinet-sized bust and its pendant (2015.287.2) represent the star-crossed lovers from once-warring nations (Anishinaabe and Dakota), and blend an idealized treatment of form with Native American dress and accessories.. Carved in high relief, the original composition of this Attic grave marker can be reconstructed by comparison with the famous stele of Hegeso in Athens. With downcast eyes, the seated matron is dressed in a himation (cloak). Much of the lintel above is missing. It would have included an inscription with her name. The deceased is represented in a common domestic setting. The mood is somber and contemplative without any overt expression of mourning.

Female Figure 3rd century B.C.-A.D. 4th century Chupicuaro This ceramic figurine features a stylized female, nude except for a beaded necklace and rounded earflares, a nose ornament, arm ornaments, and an elaborate coiffure. Hand-modeled, figurines of this type are often female and come in a variety of styles displaying regional characteristics such as the coffee-bean eyes typical of figurines from Chupícuaro. Potters emphasized the faces and heads of these figures while often minimally indicating the bodies, yet it was important to gender the figurines as female by indicating the genitalia. Small ceramic figurines were made by most ancient peoples in Mesoamerica from as early as the second millennium B.C. to the time of the Aztec in the early sixteenth century. They were placed as funerary offerings in burials or in other dedicatory assemblages. Groups of sixteen, eighteen, and five-hundred luohans were worshipped in China, where they were a common theme in painting and the decorative arts. The beautifully engraved inscription on this sculpture identifies the luohan as Kanaka, the eighth in the set of sixteen, and explains that the Qianlong emperor had this sculpture made as part of a set of sixteen images for a shrine in the palace. Figure of a reclining woman ca. 2nd century B.C.-2nd century A.D. Parthian This alabaster figurine is of a nude woman reclining on her left side. Her left arm, which would have supported her body, is missing. The right arm is extended along her side, with the tips of her fingers resting lightly on her thigh. Faint bands at the woman's neck indicate creases; the subtle folds of flesh along the right side of the torso emphasize the full curves of her figure. Reclining figures are common among Greek terracottas, and the appearance of the posture in Mesopotamian sculpture may reflect the influence of Greek terracotta manufacturing centers along the eastern Mediterranean. The majority of Greek terracottas of this type are male, however, as are reclining figures depicted in Greco-Roman funerary reliefs.
