Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of this former Benedictine abbey church include an inscribed plaque before the narthex; a polygonal apse with foliate sculptural details (13th century); and windows. Interior views include the tomb of Mater Niccolo and damaged frescoes (13th-16th centuries), but most coverage is of the architectural sculpture. The choir screen (mid 12th-13th centuries) is decorated with seraphim, busts of apostles in relief, foliate forms, rosettes, eagles, a lion, dragon, griffin, acanthus molding and vine scroll. The pulpit decoration consists of foliage inhabited by bearded or nude men, griffins or beasts as well as narrative relief sculpture such as Jonah coughed up by a whale and Jonah sitting under a gourd tree. Justice.Both façades of the Town Hall are surmounted by three bronze statues. On the front elevation, Peace is flanked bythe virtues Wisdom and Justice, of which these terracotta figures are the scale models. On the rear elevation, Atlas shoulders the celestial globe, with Temperance and Vigilance at his side. The message expressed here is that universal peace, on earth and in heaven, depends on these four virtues.

This photo dating to 1912 shows Amerigo Vespucci, a sculpture of him by Grazzini that is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Vespucci (1454-1512) was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator, and cartographer who was born in the Republic of Florence. He is best known for his namesake: the continents of North and South America.

Post-medieval: Paintings on canvas and panel Antiquities: Fragments of sculpture German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Funerary relief ca. 125-150 This relief is a type of funerary monument characteristic of the prosperous caravan city of Palmyra during the first three centuries A.D. Reliefs with a representation of the deceased and a short identifying inscription were used to seal burial niches in elaborately decorated communal tombs; those with a half-length or bust format became prevalent sometime after A.D. 65. The relief depicts the upper body of a youthful, beardless man dressed in a Greek garment known as a himation, which wraps around his right arm like a sling, holding a small leafy branch in his left hand. His expression is serene, although the intensity of his gaze is emphasized by the large size of his eyes, the carefully outlined eyelids, and the incised concentric circles indicating the iris and pupil of each eye. His hair is depicted as a row of uniform wavy curls that cover his head like a cap, ending above his protruding ears. He stands in front of a dorsalium (draped cloth) affixed by
