Marble statue of a woman late 4th century B.C. Greek, Attic This large figure probably was part of a group of funerary statues that were placed within a deep, covered niche. The back of the drapery is not carefully finished as it would not have been visible. The production of such elaborate grave monuments with large-scale statues came to an end in Attica in 317 or 307 B.C. when Demetrios of Phaleron, the governor of Athens, issued a law prohibiting ostentatious display by wealthy families.. Limestone votary of a bearded male with a wreath 2nd half of 5th century B.C. Cypriot This over-lifesize figure depicts a bearded man making an offering. He wears an ornate wreath of ivy leaves, flowers, and laurel sprays, and holds a libation bowl (phiale) in his right hand and a box and a small branch in his left. He wears a chiton and has a himation draped over his left shoulderattire that in classical Greece would have been more appropriate for a woman, since men were usually represented in heroic or athletic nudity. One of five marble female statues at the back of the Loggia della Signoria, Florence, Italy. This one is identified as Salonina Matidia, Emperor Trajan's niece. The sculptures were discovered in Rome in 1541, and were housed in the Medici villa at Rome since 1584. They were brought to the Loggia della Signoria by Pietro Leopoldo in 1789 and all underwent extensive modern restoration.

Figure of a Youth from a Funerary Stele (Monument) Made 380 BCE Greece. The features of this youthóthe deeply carved eyes beneath brows and eyelids, the angular nose, the bow-shaped mouth, and the soft musculatureótypify those of the fourth-century BC ideal of male beauty. His mantle, attached at one shoulder, suggests that he was a servant or slave. Marble statuette of a woman ca. A.D. 138-193 Roman The figure is a reduced version of a type that is known in numerous Roman copies. The inscription on the base of our example gives the name Europa. She is best known as the princess carried off to Crete by Zeus in the form of a bull. Their children were Minos, Rhadamanthys, and Sarpedon. Thanks to depictions in vase-paintings, other representations are known of Europa standing and wrapped in a cloak, rather than seated on the back of a bull. Perhaps portrait statue of poet or philosopher; copy Greek original 2nd century B.C.For the ancient Greeks, it was important to represent the entire figure in a portrait, not just the head as became popular in the Roman period. Although the head of this Roman copy is missing, the turn of the upper body to the left, the three holes beneath the left shoulder, and the angular hollow at the inner side of the left arm suggest that the figure was playing the kithara and consequently, is best identified as a poet. It may be a retrospective portrait of one of the great Greek poets of the Hellenistic age, such as Kallimachos or Theokritos, or perhaps one of the legendary bards of earlier days portrayed in Hellenistic style. On the front of the seat, above the left foot, is the signature of the sculptor Zeuxis. He must have been one of the many copyists of

Lucas Faydherbe (1617-1697) Omphale, Terracotta. Faydherbe was from a dynasty of sculptors in Mechelen (today in Belgium). He worked in Rubens studio for three years from 1636 and was strongly influenced by him. In classical legend, Omphale, Queen of Lydia, kept the hero Hercules as her slave and lover. The subject was popular in the 1600s. This bust was probably designed to be seen from below as part of the decoration of a domestic doorway. This is one of three almost identical busts.
