Viola d'Amore ca. 1780 Joseph Gagliano Italian (Naples) The viola d'amore, or viola "of love," is a bowed stringed instrument which gained great popularity in the eighteenth century. Much of its history, including the derivation of its name, is unknown. It has many characteristics of the viol family such as a flat back, ribs that are flush with the top and back, and a rosette in addition to soundholes. Yet, like a violin, it is unfretted and held under the chin while played. Violas d'amore typically have seven playing strings, though instruments with other numbers of strings are not unusual. Perhaps the most distinguishable characteristic of the viola d'amore is the presence of sympathetic strings, which are not played but located behind the bowed strings and vibrate "in sympathy." The sympathetic strings contribute to produce a tone that is clear, and often described as "silvery." The sympathetic strings also contribute to creating a more resonant sound with a longer decay. Violin American late 19th-early 20th century This folk-instrument was found near the Shaker community of New Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The unusual outline has a very broad and boxy upper and lower bouts. Made at the end of the nineteenth century, it is possible that the instrument was used by Shakers, who only allowed musical instruments into their sect after 1870. Technical description: Folk fiddle (a) of boxy shape, scribed line imitates purfling, pegbox cracked and repaired with new sides, black-stained fingerboard, tailpiece with fine tuner, squared tailpin, commercial pegs, two-piece top with wings on upper and lower bouts, two-piece back with two nails through button and heel of neck, furnished with new Aubert bridge placed on original marks well below notches in F holes, opaque orange-brown varnish showing brush marks and clamp marks at corners. Date: 1726.This treble viol retains its original neck, fingerboard, and tailpiece, and is a rare example of a professional musician's instrument in unaltered condition. Viols were the most esteemed bowed instruments of the late Renaissance, and only gradually displaced by the violin family in the eighteenth century. Viols feature flat backs, sloping shoulders, and six or seven strings, all features which distinguish them from members of the violin family. All viols are played in an upright position between the knees, or da gamba ("at the leg"), and the bow is held palm upwards.
