A Coast Guard-manned landing barge takes a terrific buffeting by a roaring wall of water during practice landings somewhere in the Pacific. Expert handlers of landing craft, Coast Guardsmen are trained to battle the treacherous, powerful in-shore currents as they bring their boatloads of fighting men to enemy beaches.

Coast Guard Cutter Sinks Sub. Coast Guard Cutter sinks sub. Heaved up from below by the force of a depth charge, the Nazi U-Boat 175 breaks surface as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter SPENCER, guns ablaze, bears down on it, full speed ahead. The submarine was sunk on April 17, 1943, in the North Atlantic, as it was approaching inside a convoy of ships ready to attack with torpedoes.

Coast Guard Invasion Rescue Flotilla Men on Alert. They were the Death's-Head emblem of skull and crossbones on their helmets. These Coast Guard Invasion Veterans but theirs is an errand of mercy. Here, members of an 83-foot Coast Guard rescue cutter - part of the now famous flotilla which rescued hundreds of men from the cold Channel waters off France - keep alert watch while on patrol.

Coast Guard Participated in Sinking Ships to Form Breakwater for Invasion of Normandy. Heavy seas, threatening to demoralize the Normandy landings soon after D-Day, beat against a barricade of sunken ships a half mile off shore. In a carefully planned operation carried through in the wake of the liberation day landings, Coast Guard officers helped supervise the "scuttling" of 23 freighters, loaded with cement, to form an improvised breakwater behind which landing craft were unloaded on the Norman beach. Cadets' Annual Summer Cruise. During the Coast Guard Cadet Practice Squadron's annual summer cruise to European ports, cadets receive one of their many lessons in seamanship training on board the CGC ROCKAWAY. A 40mm gun practice session is shown in operation here. Gas filled balloons are released to serve as targets for the 40mm and 20mm guns. The CGC ROCKAWAY accompanies the Coast Guard Academy's three-masted training bark EAGLE on the cruise. In the training process of rotating the cadets between the two vessels, one-third of the 240 cadets making the cruise stay on the ROCKAWAY at all times.

Bring Out The Wounded From Eniwetok. Coast Guardsmen transfer wounded Marines from landing barges to an assault transport lying off Eniwetok Atoll. During the swift conquest of this northerly Marshall Islands base, Coast Guardsmen shuttled their speedy landing craft from transport to beach, bringing in men and supplies, bringing out the wounded.

Bridge of Ships to the Invasion Springboard. Another great convoy -- more than a hundred merchant ships -- crawls like a giant serpent along the Atlantic horizon. Month on month, these parades of ships, miles in length, moved eastward across the Atlantic to arm Allied forces massed in England -- the invasion springboard. This picture made from a Coast Guard destroyer escort protecting the convoy's flank, vividly pictures the magnitude of pro-invasion job. And these convoys will continue to roll eastward, keeping the troops advancing their guns firing.

This Is It. "So this is where we fight." American troops, moving in at Saipan aboard a Coast Guard-manned landing boat, view for the first time the battleground which awaits them--a long, flat beach backed by thick-foliaged trees and a high ridge from which the Japs will rain murderous mortar fire around their foxholes. Black smoke curls from a burning munitions dump, hit in the terrific naval barrage which preceded the attack. This was the battleground, but not for long, as the determined soldiers and Marines pushed northward across the island.

Through Waters Purged of Torpedo Perils. Shielded by U.S. Coast Guard combat cutters, an American convoy steams over the North Atlantic ship lanes toward the European war zone. Coast Guardsmen still keep unceasing watch for U-Boat periscopes, although the earlier menace of wolf pack ambushes has been reduced to a minimum.

British Invaders Landed by the Coast Guard. During invasion maneuvers in European combat waters, Coast Guard-manned landing craft hit the beach with Royal British Marines. Front Line on Eniwetok Atoll. A Coast Guard combat photographer, advancing to the front line in the invasion of Eniwetok Atoll, catches this sharp bit of fighting action. An American plane sweeps overhead to strafe the enemy hidden in their coral trenches, while a group of Marines lie prone in the san peppering the Japs across smoking No-Man's Land with rifle fire.

Coast Guard Salvages Japanese Submarine Near Guadalcanal. The Coast Guard Salvages Jap Sub Near Guadalcanal. (No. 2 in series of 4) Towed to tulagi -- Having raised the jap two-man sub from a 24 foot bottom off the western end of Guadalcanal, the Coast Guard tender Ironwood tows it 30 miles to Tulagi Harbor on Florida Island. Dangling in chains from the Tender's crane, the "Lilliputian" under sea raider is maneuvered in toward the beach. Careful calculations keep the tender on an even keel during the operations.

Coast Guard-manned LST Serves as Floating Rail Link. A rail bridge stretches over the surf of the French coast to meet a Coast Guard-manned LST carrying freight cars from England. When the bridge connects the land track to the railed ramp of the LST, freight cars will roll easily onto the shore to begin operation with the vast rail network which supplies Allied armies on the western front.

French Coast Dead Ahead. Helmeted Yankee soldiers crouch, tightly packed, behind the bulwarks of a Coast Guard landing barge in the historic sweep across the English Channel to the shores of Normandy. Minutes later, these G.I. Joes dashed through the surf and up the beach under the withering fire of the Nazi defenders. These Coast Guard barges rode back and forth through D-Day bringing wave on wave of reinforcements to the beachhead.

The Liberators Move Against the Philippines. An armada of American power steams in impressive array along the coast of Leyte Island in the Philippines as dawn of A-Day bathes the Pacific in golden glory. These transports, manned by Coast Guard and Navy crews, carried the thousands of troops that were to speed to the Leyte beaches after warships had softened Jap defenses with shells.

Battle Practice in the Atlantic. Sharpening up for enemy aircraft, a Coast Guard gun crew lets go with an anti-aircraft battery from a Coast Guard-manned assault transport somewhere in the Pacific. These drills are frequent for the men whose gunnery protects ships and their cargoes of men and supplies from enemy air attack.

Last Respects to a Comrade Who Died at Sea. Somewhere at sea in a voyage to India, an American soldier is given to the oceans in burial services on the deck of a Coast Guard-manned transport. Standing at attention and saluting are the fellow comrades of the soldier and Coast Guard crewmen paying their last respects.

Coast Guardsman Land Aussies in Balikpapan Invasion. (First in a series of 2 photos). A Coast Guard combat photographer, standing erect in the stern of an LCVP, snaps Australian troops as they storm ashore in the first assault wave to hit Balikpapan on the southeast coast of oil-rich Borneo. Heavy black smoke from a burning oil well rolls over the beachhead, shattered by preinvasion blasting from the sea and air. Jap mortar fire raked the beach at intervals. Coast Guard Combat Photographer Gerald C. Anker, of 437 North Sycamore, Los Angeles, took this remarkable picture of his fellow lensman, James L. Lonergan of 229 Midway Oval, Poquonock Bridge, Conn.

Coast Guard Combat Cutter Captures 28 Nazis In Greenland. This image depicts a Coast Guard cutter that pursued a German armed trawler for 70 miles through twisting channels of Greenland ice.

First Antarctic Pistol Tournament. The U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind (WAGB-282) sponsors the first pistol tournament ever held in the Antarctic (January 20, 1957). Chilled thumbs pull the triggers at targets lined up in ice 7 feet thick at Helleric Sound. Probably the most unusual setting in the history of match shooting, this was one of those rare Antarctic days with atmosphere crystal clear, the temperature hovering around 26 degrees, a light breeze of six knots bloating down from the ranges of Victoria Land. The intensity of the sun's reflection on the snow makes it necessary for the shooters to wear dark gloves. Competitors were divided into the groups, Old-Timers and TYROs. Old-Timers included all NRA (National Rifle Association) card holders handicapped according to their classifications. TYRO entries were limited to non-NRA members who had qualified with the .45 caliber pistol over Services qualification courses. At this time the Northwind lay moored at McMurdo Sound whe

No Relaxation After Battle. No relaxation after battle for crew members of the victorious U.S. Coast Guard cutter CAMPBELL. After responding to "General Quarters" 12 times within 12 hours, six times of which they contacted Nazi U-boats, crew members turned to in an effort to repair damage to the ship's hull suffered when she rammed a submarine. Coast Guardsmen are shown above preparing to put a temporary cofferdam over the side to block flow of water into the Coast Guard cutter through a 12-foot rent in the hull. She is now in an East Coast port.

Makin Natives Welcome White Man's "War Canoes". Natives of Makin, shown standing on the beach with U.S. Coast Guardsmen, welcomed the arrival of the American invaders. The natives were fascinated by the sight of the Navy task force, of which the Coast Guardsmen were a part.

Coast Guard Rescues Survivors of Torpedoed Transport in North Atlantic. With the frothing, freezing North Atlantic tossing icy spray, survivors of a torpedoed U.S. troop transport cling to the life lines tossed to them by a U.S. Coast Guard Combat Cutter. The transport, converted from the liner Henry R. Mallory, was sunk by an enemy U-boat on a snow-whipped night early in 1943. More than 300 American soldiers, sailors and Marines were missing when the U.S. Coast Guard Cutters BIBB and INGHAM picked up the survivors from lifeboats, such as the one pictured here, the War Shipping Administration announced today (Nov. 5, 1944). The transport, in convoy, was headed for Iceland. This picture, made by a Coast Guard Combat photographer, shows survivors being taken aboard the BIBB.

Mountains of Supplies on LST. Thousands of boxes of supplies are transferred from a Coast Guard-manned transport to an LST (Landing Ship, Tanks) during the assault upon Kwajalein atoll in the Marshall Islands. The supplies rolled toward the beaches close in the wake of Coast Guard-manned landing craft, bringing the fighting men to the beaches.

Survivors of Torpedoed U.S. Transport Rescued by Coast Guard in North Atlantic. Battered by North Atlantic storms and haunted by the horror that they would not be found, two survivors of a torpedoed U.S. troop transport are rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard Combat Cutter, the BIBB. The U.S. War Shipping Administration today (Nov. 5, 1944) announced the sinking of the former liner Henry R. Mallory, en route to Iceland, by an enemy submarine early in 1943, when U-boats were a menace to shipping to Iceland and England. More than 300 American soldiers, sailors and Marines perished. The Coast Guard cutters sped to the scene and picked up many survivors from life rafts, boats and creckage. They arrived in the nick of time as many of the victims loosed their numbed grips and sank- losers in the fight to survive in the freezing, stormy sea.

World War I - surviving officers and crew of the French battleship Bouvet sinking near gallipoli 1915. In World War I, she escorted troop convoys from North Africa to France. She then joined the naval operations off the Dardanelles, where she participated in a major attack on the Turkish fortresses in the straits on 18 March 1915. During the attack, she struck a mine and sank within two minutes; only some 50 men were rescued from a complement of 710.

Even Bicycles are Used in Invasion. Coast Guardsmen, aboard an assault transport at some debarkation point in England, hoist a load of bicycles up over the side for use in the invasion of France. The bikes went along with jeeps, trucks, bulldozers and tanks to be used in the tremendous transportation task involved in securing the Norman beachhead.

On discovering a vessel in trouble he burns a signal. This serves to warn the vessel of her danger, or to apprise her that help will soon be at hand if she is already on shoal or beach.

International Ice Patrol - 1948. Combined air and surface operations and the effective use of radar and loran by Coast Guard patrol units contributed to the success of the 1948 International Ice Patrol. It was the mission of the 1948 patrol to locate and report ice conditions constituting a menace to navigation, to determine set and drift of icebergs, to collect weather information and surface and sub-surface oceanographic data, and to keep all interested parties and commercial shipping thereof. The importance to mariners of "ice broadcasts" is evidenced by the fact that practically all commercial radio transmission ceases during the broadcasts. The International Ice Patrol along the steamer lanes of the North Atlantic is conducted by the United States Coast Guard. Coast Guard cutters and planes assigned to the patrol are based at Argentia, Newfoundland. Willing Nazi Prisoners Include Poles, Australians and Czechs. Captured in the battle of St. Lo, a group of Nazi prisoners are gathered on a French beach for transfer in the Coast Guard-manned LST (background) to England for internment. The group includes Poles, Austrians and Czechs. They were willing prisoners but expressed disappointment when they were sent to England instead of the United States.

Coast Guard Helicopter Demonstrates Air-Sea Rescue with New Type of Harness. Out of the Sea -- Into the Clouds.. Picked out of the sea after grasping a new u-type harness dropped from the Aircraft, Coast Guardsman Carl A. Yanuzzi, Aviation Machinist's mate, is hauled aloft and is about to enter the cabin of a coast guard helicopter. The simulated rescue was made from the Coast Guard Air Station, Brooklyn, N.Y. recently to test the effectiveness of the new harness in air-sea rescue. Coast Guard commander F. A. Erickson is at the controls of the Sikorsky, now winging back to land.

Surgeon, U.S. Public Health Service, of San Francisco, CA, appears to be a toe dancer nimbly gliding the foamy crest of an ocean wave. He is riding a breeches buoy from his Coast Guard combat cutter to a merchant ship to give medical assistance to a stricken seaman. Dr. Dowdy's home is at 1561 22nd Avenue, in San Francisco.
