Mercy Accompanies Invasions (3 of 4). Coast Guardsmen in the landing craft carefully prepare the wounded, lashed to their stretchers, for hoisting aboard the Coast Guard manned transport. A chair from some Italian building has been utilized to prop one man up in his stretcher, a position dictated by the nature of his injuries. Every effort is made to give proper care to the wounded.

Hell Ahead. Off the fire-swept beaches of Iwo Jima, known as Hell's Acre, Amtracks loaded with Marines emerge from the depths of a Coast Guard-manned LST, at right, and surge toward shore. This picture was made on D-Day as assault forces moved in toward the bloodiest battle in the Pacific war.

Filipino natives, paddling out in their "Banca Boats" (outrigger canoes), hail Coast Guardsmen aboard an arriving LST as "liberators." Poorly-clad and undernourished from nearly three years of Jap domination, these people, rejoicing in their new freedom, voice the warmest welcome to each newcoming American ship, offering gifts to crewmen and clamoring their willingness to barter.

Destroyer Escort Provisions Norse Tanker at Sea. Coming to the assistance of a Norwegian tanker which has signalled she was short of food, Coast Guardsmen, manning a destroyer escort in a North Atlantic convoy, deliver 11 cases of food over a line fired by a Lyle gun. The cases contained dehydrated potatoes, coffee, cheese, corned beef, preserved butter, and milk powder.

The Battle Goes On. Storm- Through the turmoil of wind and wave, a Coast Guard photographer sights on a different type of war: an LST is pounded by heavy seas in the worst typhoon in Okinawa's history. Here is another dramatic instance of the battle the U.S. Coast Guard fights eternally, in peace and war.

Coast Guard Salvages Japanese Submarine Near Guadalcanal. The Coast Guard Salvages Jap Sub Near Guadalcanal. (No. 1 in series of 4) Cutter Ironwood hooks on -- Sunk in 24 feet of water at the western end of Guadalcanal Island, an 80-foot, two-man Jap submarine is the quarry of the Coast Guard tender Ironwood in an assigned "Fishing Expedition." With some difficulty, the Coast Guardsmen passed iron chains under the sub, and here, that job having been accomplished, the ironwood is taking the first lift. Coral reefs and the war heads of two unexploded torpedoes on the enemy craft increased the hazards of the operation.

Coast Guard Rescues Invaders in English Channel. Coast Guardsmen haul a sailor up over the side during a sweep across the English Channel at the height of the Invasion of the French Coast. The survivor was aboard a small vessel which has blown to the bottom when it hit a Nazi mine. Coast Guard rescue craft saved hundreds of invaders thrown into Channel waters during the early hours of the liberation attacks on the Norman Coast.

Nose Dive. Down a ramp, leading from an assault landing ship, this Medical Corps truck was taking a nose dive into the surf as a Coast Guard combat photographer took the picture. Coast Guardsmen piloted the landing craft onto enemy beaches, and then supplies rolled out in a volume that sent the Axis reeling back into the Italian mountains.

Munitions Ship Scuttled off Staten Island. This image depicts the Panamanian ship El Estero, pumped full of water and sunk 200 yards off Staten Island by Coast Guardsmen, risking their lives to prevent a harbor disaster. The ship was loaded with 1,300 tons of munitions when it caught fire in the spring of 1943.

American Seapower Closes Vise on Saipan. A Coast Guard gunner is his turret aboard an invasion ship off Saipan gases out at the American sea forces which is irresistibly driving toward the Japanese homeland. Invaders from these ships stormed ashore in landing barges, LSTs and amtracs to thrust the Japs back to a small corner of the island in three weeks of furious fighting.

Wounded Invaders Return to North Africa. In a North African port Americans wounded in the first days of the invasion of Sicily are unloaded from a Coast Guard manned transport. The transport carried Army contingents participating in the first wave of the invasion to Sicily.

LST Discharges Supplies on Tarawa Reef. At Bititu Island, Tarawa atoll, trucks run supplies from the belly of a Coast Guard-manned LST across protecting reefs that guarded the heavily-fortified island. Five hundred yards of reef girded the shore, according to Coast Guard Lieut. R.T. Leary of Green Farms, Conn., who commanded this LST.

They're Off! The Invasion's On. Files of Coast Guard LCIs (landing craft infantry) move across the English Channel for the D-Day invasion of the Coast of Normandy. In this photograph by Coast Guard combat photographer S. Scott Wigle, former Detroit Newspaperman. It was the first American-made D-Day picture from London. The LCIs carry barrage balloons as protection against low-flying Nazi strafing planes.

The Coast Guard Brings 'Em In. In final practice amphibious maneuvers on the coast of North Africa, Coast Guard-manned landing craft smash through the surf and hit the beach to land their loads of American fighters. Each landing craft carries a crew of four Coast Guardsmen and 36 soldiers. Coast Guard landing craft, such as these, struck with the initial liberation waves of the coast of Normandy before dawn on D-Day.

Blinks Blimp, Brother Blinks Back. When Lieutenant Henry Keene, U.S. Coast Guard, blinked a Navy blimp that his ship passed somewhere in the North Atlantic, his brother, Ensign Robert W. Keene of the Naval Air Force, blinked back. The surprise was mutual. Lieutenant Keene, a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy and veteran of North Atlantic convoy duty, is 24 years old. His brother is 20 years old. Their home is at 115 Lucas Lane, Bethesda, Maryland. In the insert Lieutenant Keene is shown at the left and Ensign Keene at the right, as they met on leave.

Just Before the Battle. As a U.S. Coast Guard manned transport sails to invade Makin troops aboard relax with a magazine, relying on the Coast Guard lookout and his mates for their safety. A short time later the soldiers were driving the Japanese off the island. The Coast Guard transport operated as part of a Navy task force.

Return From Scouting Trip. The Antarctic. The World of Ice. While the thin-hulled vessels of the central group of the Byrd Expedition to the Antarctic wait in an open water area, the Coast Guard's NORTHWIND returns to them after scouting through the pack ice, in quest of a "lead". The YANCEY, MERRICK, and the MT. OLYMPUS can be seen waiting in the background. The NORTHWIND encountered heavy ice while scouting, as the photograph shows, but smashed her way back to the waiting ships. The lead the NORTHWIND needed had been found, and the thin-hulled ships followed the Coast Guard's powerful icebreaker through at last to the Bay of Whales, their destination.

Lenten Mass Honors Marshall Islands Dead. Hundreds of fighting Coast Guardsmen and Marines gather in reverence at an Easter season Catholic memorial mass on the after boat deck of a Coast Guard-manned assault transport off the Marshall Islands. Honor was paid to comrades who gave their lives in the victorious invasion of Kwajalein and Eniwetok Atolls and other Marshall Island strongholds. The ship's chaplain, assisted by the Marine Corps chaplain, lead the services before an improvised altar, marked by the American flag draped from a landing barge.

Bering Sea Patrol - Coast Guard Cutter KLAMATH, Point Hope, Alaska (3 of 10). Eskimos of Point Hope, Alaska, a village inside the Arctic Circle, wait on the quarter deck of the U.S. Coast Guard KLAMATH for their turns in the dental chair. (Note the baby tucked inside the tunic of the Eskimo mother in left forefront.) This was a typical scene following the KLAMATH's stops at 21 native villages to deliver dental and medical aid during the 1955 Bering Sea Patrol. The KLAMATH furnished this service in cooperation with the Territorial Department of Health and the Alaska Native Service, in addition to her regular duties on the patrol.

Amtracs from a Coast Guard-manned LST surge toward the beach with the first and second assault waves on L-Day, as a giant Navy battle wagon delivers a broadside at Jap installations on the coast of Okinawa. Down the ramp through the surf and onto the beach with a couple of bounces and another jeep is delivered from a Coast Guard-manned assault transport via a landing barge to American forces at Emirau in the South Pacific. Here Comes a Raft of Groceries. Way up there under the Arctic Circle, Coast Guardsmen unload a raft piled with boxes of supplies. This novel delivery service brings the groceries from a ship off shore to a Coast Guard base in the far north, a link in the vast American defense system.
