Storm Brewing on the North Atlantic. Snarling seas snap at a Coast Guard combat cutter ploughing its course through the North Atlantic. This striking photograph, made by a Coast Guard Combat Photographer, shows all the heaving power of the ocean as its waves roll higher and higher, presaging a spell of heavy weather.

The Icy Atlantic Lapping at Their Feet, Coast Guardsmen Work. The icy Atlantic lapping at their feet, Coast Guardsmen work with calculated haste to repair the hole in the side of the Coast Guard cutter Campbell caused by ramming a Nazi U-boat. All the men over the side were lifelines, but none of them fell into the water. The gallant Campbell's crew answered General quarters 12 times within 12 hours; were in contact with submarines six times during that time. A tug towed the Campbell 800 miles to an unnamed East Coast port.

Jeeps Balk in the Surf at Leyte. Stuck in the surf-washed sands of Leyte Island, two army Jeeps are mired for a tense moment after rolling out of the mouth of an LST. The Death of a Coast Guard LCI. Mortally wounded by a direct hit, this Coast Guard infantry landing craft limps alongside a Coast Guard assault transport to evacuate all hands and its load of soldiers before sinking in the English Channel. Nazi gunners knocked out the LCI during the initial invasion of the French coast on D-Day.

Nazis Abandon Sub Mortally Wounded by Depth Charges. Panicky Nazi seamen pour out of the conning tower of a submarine blasted to the surface by depth charges accurately planted by U.S. Coast Guard and Navy destroyer escorts somewhere in the Atlantic. Some of the Germans already have plunged into the sea and others followed as their crippled raider made its "curtains" dive to the bottom. Twelve of the Nazis were picked up and became prisoners of war aboard one of the Coast Guard-manned vessels.

Three Coast Guardsmen, silhouetted at the stern of a Coast Guard-manned LST, may be musing of the long road back to America as their powerful attacking force penetrates deep into the crumbling Japanese sea empire. They are part of General MacArthur's array of sea strength which stormed and captured Morotai.

Landing Barge Bashed by Mortar Fire at Saipan. The Japs scored a direct hit on this one. Running in to the beach at Saipan, this landing craft, caught a barage of mortar fire and was smoking as the Coast Guard-manned craft from which this picture was made dashed up to give assistance.

International Ice Patrol - 1948. Occupying the spot where the wartime bombardier rode, this Coast Guard officer, a special ice observer, peers through the plexiglace nose of a converted B-17 in his peacetime assignment with the International Ice Patrol. Coast Guard ice observers are trained in observing and evaluating the size, direction and speed of iceberg travel. The ice observer stands continuous watch in the "nose" of the plane. Combined air and surface operations and the effective use of radar and loran by Coast Guard patrol units contributed to the success of the 1948 International Ice Patrol. It was the mission of the 1948 patrol to located and report ice conditions constituting a menace to navigation, to determine set and drift of icebergs, to collect weather information and surface and sub-surface oceanographic data, and to keep all interested parties and commercial shipping informed thereof. Buffaloan Thumbs Ride To Invasion Beach. Coast Guard Combat Photographer, John E. Bickel, of Buffalo, N. Y., who "thumbed a ride" in the first wave of landing barges in the assault on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshalls, is shown "on the job" during an amphibious attack in the South Pacific. Wounded In Attack on Bougainville. Wounded U.S. Marines are brought aboard a transport, manned by Coast Guardsmen, in Empress Augusta Bay at Bougainville Island, the Solomons. The Marines were in the invasion force which assaulted Japanese-held Bougainville, and established a successful beachhead.

Northwest Passage. Divers in Arctic waters fitted with "SCUBA" (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) gear prepare to descend for an underwater inspection of the hull of the Coast Guard Otter Storis. The divers are Lieutenant Commander Robert C. Phillips, executive officer of the Storis and Lieutenant (junior grade) Richard Nielsen, Jr., of Santa Cruz, Calif. The Storis with buoy tenders Spar and Bramble, reached ice-free water beyond Simpson Strait when the inspection took place.

Mine Blast Victims Rescued in Channel. Survivors of an allied invasion ship, sunk by a Nazi mine, struggle in the waters of the English Channel off the Coast of France during the height of the storming of the Norman Beaches. Clutching to pieces of wreckage, they kept afloat until a Coast Guard rescue craft came along and hauled them aboard. Coast Guard rescue vessels saved from death the Channel on D-Day and the days that followed, as Nazi guns strived to stem the tide of invasion.

Hitting Zambales to Seal Off Bataan. Hitting Zambales to Seal Off Bataan. Three weeks after the historic Luzon landings on Lingayen Gulf, American forces hit the beaches of Zambales of seal off the vital Bataan Peninsula in the drive on Manila. Instead of stiff Jap resistance, they were met by jubilant Filipinos. Here, a jeep rolls off the ramp of a Coast Guard-manned landing craft, which came in with troops and equipment from a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport.

Northwind "Dew Line" 1955. An aerial view shows the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind entering a field of ice off Pt. Farrow at the top of Alaska during the 1955 summer support operations for the "Dew Line" (Distant early Warning) radar stations. The icebreaker ferried two helicopters for ices reconnaissance work. During the mission between July and late September the Northwind working as member of a Navy Pacific Task Force Group helped Military Sea Transportation Service's cargo ships through ice from Nome, beyond the Arctic and east across the top of Alaska and back. She broke ice leads carried cargo, broke out ice-trapped ships, towed ships in distress, and performed rescue work. On July 16, the Northwind will leave Seattle to join a Pacific Task Force Group for the 1956 "Dew Line" push. Having returned from the Arctic by October, the Northwind will then prepare to join the Navy Task Force 43 for Antarctic "Operations Deep Freeze II" 1956 - 57, beginning sometime in November.

Somewhere at sea a Coast Guardsman sends a semaphore message to the officers of a Coast Guard cutter as the two vessels maintain the anti-submarine patrol, clearing the sea lanes to safeguard the vital merchant shipping. Expert Coast Guard signalmen use the semaphore flags and blinker lights, such as the one at the signalman's right, to send messages to other ships or shore stations.

Passing a Dead Aggressor. A United States Coast Guard combat cameraman caught this picture of American soldiers as they drive by a dead Japanese on Makin. The Japanese was killed as he was running for the hulk of the ship, visible between the trees, where machine gun nests were established in an effort to halt the oncoming Americans. An LST, part of the Navy task force which included Coast Guardsmen, can be seen at the left.

Coast Guardsmen Evacuate Wounded From Southern France Beaches. "Shove her in clover, Mac; we've got to get those wounded men off in a hurry," the Coast Guardsman, at lower left, seems to be saying as he indicates with his hands the distance still remaining from the landing barge to the Coast Guard-manned assault transport on which he stands. Men who fell on the invasion beaches of Southern France were swiftly transferred to ships standing off shore for hospitalization.

Dye Tipped Arrows Mark Iceberg. A new experiment in detecting iceberg drift and deterioration processes is conducted on the U.S. Coast Guard oceanographic vessel Evergreen off newfoundland during the 1965 Ice Patrol season. From the deck a crew member arches a bow, aiming a dye tipped arrow at a selected iceberg target about 150 yards away from the ship. As the tube of dye shatters against the berg, it will leave an eight to ten-foot stain that will last about three days. This method makes it easier for the Coast Guard oceanographers to keep track of bergs, which change shape and direction according to variations in winds and currents. Dye colors are green, red, and four shades of blue. The reason for choosing the bow and arrow is because its simplest and most economical way to mark icebergs. The Evergreen is based at Wood Hole, Massachusetts.

It's the first day of the invasion of Luzon, and Coast Guardsmen and soldiers labor together bringing supplies ashore for General MacArthur's march on Manila. Landing craft from a Coast Guard-manned attack transport line the beach in rear.

Breakwater of Sunken Ships Shielded Landings on Normandy in Violent Storm. Strategic sinking of 23 freighters, bow to stern, on D-Day Plus One and Two, created a breakwater behind which Allied invasion craft unloaded troops and supplies during a furious storm that ripped the Normandy beaches. Six Coast Guard officers, all export in dealing with treacherous surf currents, participated in the supervision of the sinking and were commended for their efficient accomplishment of the task. Here, a mountainous wave beats against one of the sunken vessels, as landing operations proceed.

White Phantoms of the Northern Seas. The breathless beauty of an iceberg floating from the Arctic holds the gaze of Coast Guardsmen, lining the rail of a combat cutter. Frequently, the sturdy Coast Guard Cutters on the Greenland Patrol encounter these floating islands of glistening ice - dazzling to look upon but hazardous to the ships that pass over the northern lanes.

For the Job Ahead. An armada of LST's pours Army equipment ashore at Tacoblan Airstrip on Leyte Island in the Philippines. Note the causeways leading from the beach to the ships. These were hurriedly built by bulldozers scraping the sand and earth from the beach and building the "roads" for each ship's invasion traffic. Bomb craters, blasted in the softening process, are clearly visible.

Life Raft Blown to Surface from Last German Sub Sank by U.S. Forces in Atlantic. Two Coast Guard officers examine a life raft blasted to the surface in the killing of the last U-boat of the war off Point Judith, Rhode Island. The life raft came up with oil and other wreckage after the USS ATHERTON, the USS ERICSSON, and the Coast Guard-manned frigate USS MOBERLY trapped the marauder and blasted it with lethal patterns of depth charges. Using a gasoline powered ice drill they bore a hole to pocket the charge. Wearing waterproofing exposure suits, the men boarded the iceberg from a lifeboat with the aid of crampons (shoe spikes), ice axes, and lifelines attached to pitons driven into the ice as they crawled singly as mountain climbers to the planting spot. Standing guard nearby for an emergency and to evaluate tests is the Ice Patrol oceanographic vessel USCGC Evergreen. The iceberg boarders are (l to r) U.S. Coast Guard officers Ensign Robert W. Coast Guard Invaders at Wakde Island. These four Coast Guard invaders served aboard one of 12 Coast Guard-manned LSTs (Landing Ship Tanks) which hit the beach and helped smash bitter Jap resistance on the beach of Wakde Island off Sarmi, Dutch New Guinea, on May 18. Amphibious Tractor Provides the "Pull". It's a tough pull through the surf from a Coast Guard-manned LST to the firm footing of a South Sea island beach. This picture, taken by a U.S. Coast Guard combat photographer in the Cape Gloucester invasion, shows an amphibious tractor, called a "buffalo," hauling a truck-load of heavy war material through the shallows from an LST.
