View of Tunis.In the second half of the seventeenth century, Tunis was a haven for pirates and privateers who lay in wait for Dutch merchant ships. To protect Dutch merchantmen, the navy patrolled the Mediterranean Sea. Nooms painted the ships and the topography of the shore with remarkable detail. He probably used drawings made on site as inspiration for this painting.

Fishing Boats with Hucksters Bargaining for Fish 1832-1842 England. In Fishing Boats with Hucksters Bargaining for Fish, Joseph Mallord William Turner translated his enduring preoccupation with the sea into a dramatic vision. The subject itself and the paintingís low horizon line derive directly from seventeenth-century Dutch sea painting. But where the boats in the seascapes of the period are almost reconstructible in their exactness, Turnerís minimal and more impressionistic depiction of vessels is secondary to the drama of roiling seas, billowing sails, and a threatening sky. With just a few figurative details, Turner roughly sketched in the standing, gesturing figure on the right, who is negotiating to buy fish from the larger, crowded fishing boat on the left. Between them is a mythical golden boat that seems to spring from the artistís imagination, and on the distant horizon is the suggestion of progress, a steam-driven vessel. The Whale-oil Refinery near the Village of Smerenburg, Cornelis de Man, 1639 painting Beuingenburg on Spitsbergen was a settlement of Dutch whales. The painter has never been there and combined images and stories he knew. The mountain on the left is probably that of Jan Mayen-Island (Beerenberg), in addition to the masts of whales. In the tear cooking ovens close to the beach, chopped pieces of whale bacon are cooked and processed into liquid tear. On the left on the beach is a whale gift that is being blown. Shipwreck off a Rocky Coast by Adam Willaerts (1577-1664) oil on panel, 1614. Those who went to sea played roulette with their lives. The wooden ships were small and fragile and the very real dangers were exaggerated with horror stories of hideous creatures living in the unfathomable depths. Willaerts created an image of every seamans worst nightmare. One ship has been dashed on the rocks, and the there two are heeling over. The survivors at centre are threatened by a monstrous fish.

The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC in Dutch, literally 'United East Indian Company') was a chartered company established in 1602, when the States-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It was also arguably the world's first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies. It ceased to function in 1798.
