USS Massachusetts (BB-59), Fitted Out by Navy Yard, Boston. This item is a photograph depicting the battleship USS Massachusetts (BB-59) when she was based at the Boston Navy Yard during her fitting out and shakedown. USS Massachusetts was the fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name of the sixth state in the Union and was one of four South Dakota-class fast battleships. Laid down July 20, 1939 and launched September 23, 1941 by the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, USS Massachusetts was commissioned May 12, 1942 at Boston Navy Yard. "Big Mamie," as she was affectionately called by her crew, has the distinction of having fired the U.S. Navy's first and last 16-inch shells of World War II, during which she participated in operations in North Africa, the Gilbert, Carolina and Marshall Islands campaigns, the Philippines campaign, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Leyte Gulf. USS Massachusetts earned 11 battle stars for her World War II service. Today she serves as a museum ship in Battleship
