The 165th Airlift Wing members hosted a 9/11 Memorial 5K race on September 10, 2022 at Savannah Air National Guard Base, Georgia to honor those lost as we commemorate the 21st year since the September 11, 2001 attacks. The 5k race gave the military, firefighters, and local community an opportunity to demonstrate their respect and memorialize those who were lost during the attacks on September 11, 2001. Fire fighters from Garden City and Pooler used their fire trucks to hang a large American flag at the starting/finishing line of the race.

The event, for fifth- through eighth-grade students and their parents, focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education activities that included astronaut appearances, a hovercraft, vortex cannon and alternative fuel vehicles. A nonprofit organization, RAWTools, will take the 189 firearms collected at this event and melt them down to create garden tools. They also spent some time touring the Idaho National Guards 204th Regional Training Institute and climbing on its tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles. More than 170 Idaho students from five different schools and agencies participated in STARBASE-Idaho summer camps this summer as the program expanded from a single camp for children of Idaho National Guardsmen to eight camps with three specially designed themes.

Students and faculty from the Onslow County Schools Career and Technical Education Summer Accelerator Program visited NMCCL several times throughout the month of June. NMCCLs STEM Coordinator Lieutenant Adam Rondina arranged for the students to tour different areas of the Medical Center to help align program initiatives with their visit. The CTE program focuses on introduction of trades to rising eighth-grade students in fields for construction, health sciences, food, hospitality and agriculture. Students received hands-on demonstrations and discussions with staff from our laboratory, trauma and physical therapy departments.
