CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, workers await the delivery of the fifth tower segment atop the tower segments already secured on a new mobile launcher, or ML, being constructed to support the Constellation Program.When completed, the tower will be approximately 345 feet tall and have multiple platforms for personnel access. The construction is under way at the mobile launcher park site area north of Kennedy's Vehicle Assembly Building. The launcher will provide a base to launch the Ares I rocket, designed to transport the Orion crew exploration vehicle, its crew and cargo to low Earth orbit. Its base is being made lighter than space shuttle mobile launcher platforms so the crawler-transporter can pick up the heavier load of the tower and taller rocket.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - As night falls at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the mobile launcher, or ML, nears the park site outside the Vehicle Assembly Building. The ML is coming to the end of its 4.2-mile, day-long trek from Launch Pad 39B. Data on the ML collected from structural and functional engineering tests during its two-week stay on the pad will be used in the next phases of construction. The 355-foot-tall ML structure, which took about two years to construct, will be modified by NASAs 21st Century Ground Systems Program to support NASAs Space Launch System, the heavy-lift rocket that will launch astronauts into deep space on future exploration missions.
