Serena Pulitzer Lederer (1867-1943) 1899 Gustav Klimt Austrian Beautiful and stylish, Serena Pulitzer Lederer was a star of turn-of-the-century Viennese society. For this portrait, commissioned by her husband, the industrialist August Lederer, Klimt employed soft, sinuous brushstrokes to present Serena as an apparition in white. "An upright flower, long-stemmed like a black tulip," enthused one critic when the painting was shown in 1901 at the tenth exhibition of the Vienna Secession—a group founded by Klimt and other artists four years earlier, with the aim of putting the city at the forefront of the international art world. Sketch of a Spanish Man Edward Penfield (American, 1866-1925). Sketch of a Spanish Man, 1906. Watercolor and graphite on medium-weight, off-white, moderately textured, wove paper, sheet: 11 1/2 x 7 3/4 in. (29.2 x 19.7 cm). In these two works, Edward Penfield used controlled graphite outlines and watercolor washes to detail the tattered clothes and scruffy faces of working men he encountered during a 1906 trip through Spain. The frank realism of his approach gives his images a documentary authenticity; indeed, they were most likely studies for his illustrated travelogue Spanish Sketches (1911). While capitalizing on Americans fascination with the picturesque appeal of Spain, Penfield also endowed his subjects with a dignity reflected in their proud bearing. American Art 1906

Home Scene Thomas Eakins (American, 1844-1916). Home Scene, ca. 1871. Oil on canvas, 21 7/16 x 18 in. (54.4 x 45.7 cm). Model Sisters Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargent were just beginning their hugely successful careers when they turned to cherished sisters as their models for these two intimate works. Although both had studied figure painting in Paris, they found powerful inspiration in Dutch and Spanish seventeenth-century painting (especially the works of Rembrandt van Rijn and Diego Velázquez), famous for their expressive description of light and shadow. Eakins painted his sister Margaret (1853-1882) overseeing the younger Caroline (1865-1889) at a time when their mother was gravely ill. Dancers in the Rehearsal Room with a Double Bass ca. 1882-85 Edgar Degas French Degas used an elongated frieze format for more than forty rehearsal scenes made over the course of two decades. This is one of the first such works; it was preceded by The Dance Lesson (ca. 1879, National Gallery of Art, Washington). Here, the angled wall in the foreground sets off the striking juxtaposition of a double bass and a seated dancer, bent over to tie the laces of her slipper. Hanging scroll, pillar painting: ink and color on silk; painting only: 104.8 x 15.5 cm (41 1/4 x 6 1/8 in.); including mounting: 175.3 x 32.7 cm (69 x 12 7/8 in.). Shigemasa favored using colors in broad opaque masses, as seen here in the beauties robes. He was a painter, printmaker, and poet, specializing in courtesan and actor prints. The format of this hanging scroll or "pillar painting" allows for the work to be hung on a pillar in a Japanese home.
